Product description

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is an amphoteric tenside (betaine) derived from the fatty acids of coconut oil. It is produced by synthesis from coconut fatty materials - first amidoamine is prepared from coconut fatty acid and aminopropyl, then "betaine" (quaternization) to a stable amphoteric structure.
In practice, it acts as a secondary tenside, which refines the wash profile, promotes the formation of creamy and stable foam, and improves the behaviour of tenside mixtures (including thickening and reducing the irritancy of stronger anionic tensides). It is also often used in modern "sulfate-free" formulations in combination with sulfates, where it enhances comfort and foamability.

Key benefits

  • Gentler wash - reduces irritation and "degreasing" sensation in tenside systems.
  • Creamy and stable foam - improves both the volume and "foam feel" of the foam.
  • Synergy in blends - works well with both anionic and non-ionic tensides (glucosides, sarcosinates, sulfosuccinates).
  • Improved processability - aids in thickening and improves viscosity stability in many formulations.
  • Universal use - shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansing gels, liquid soaps.

Suitable for products such as

  • Shampoos (both liquid and gel) - softening and improved lather.
  • Shower gels and bath foam - creamier, more stable foam.
  • Facial cleansing gels and foams (rinse-offs) - softer profile when combined with other tensides.
  • Liquid soaps and hand wash gels - better lather and comfort after washing.
  • Intimate hygiene (rinse-off) - in mild tenside blends and at the appropriate pH setting.

Use in formulation

  • Soluble in: water (normally supplied as an aqueous solution).
  • Miscible with: anionic, non-ionic and other amphoteric tensides; often combined with Lauryl Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate or Sodium Cocoamphoacetate for a gentler and foamier system.
  • Compatible with: humectants (glycerin, propanediol), chelators and common thickeners for tenside systems; when thickening with salt, it is recommended to dose in small increments.
  • Dosage (indicative): typically as a secondary tenside in shampoos and shower gels.
  • Technology tip: add to the aqueous phase or to the finished tenside base with gentle agitation to minimize aeration; adjust pH after homogenization and after adding perfume/preservative.

Safety and storage

  • For cosmetic use; avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Use appropriate protective equipment when handling tensides; avoid aerosol formation and excessive foaming during mixing.
  • Store in a tightly closed container, dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
  • For products for sensitive skin, minimize perfuming and always test the final formulation (pH, tolerance, stability).

FAQ

Why is Cocamidopropyl Betaine used so often as a "co-tenside"?

It is amphoteric in nature, so it works well with other tensides: it improves foam, softens the wash and often helps with viscosity adjustment in tenside mixtures.

Can CAPB impair tolerability in very sensitive people?

A small proportion of people may develop sensitivity to ingredients related to manufacturing or to a particular quality of raw material. For products for extra sensitive skin, it is advisable to choose a good quality raw material, minimise perfuming and do a patch test of the final product.

How will CAPB be affected by salt thickening?

In many formulations, it promotes salt thickening. Add salt gradually and always after complete homogenisation.

Is it suitable in a facial cleansing gel with an acidic pH?

Yes, it is often used in mildly acidic formulations. However, the stability and clarity depends on the whole tenside mixture, perfuming and thickening, so it is advisable to fine-tune the pH at the end and do stability tests.

Why do I get a lot of foam and aeration when mixing?

CAPB is very foamy. It helps to mix slowly, keep the stirrer below the surface, add tensides to the water (not the other way around) and don't homogenize at unnecessarily high speeds.
