Product description
Decyl Glucoside is a non-ionic sugar surfactant produced by condensation of glucose (from plant starches) with a C10 fatty alcohol (from vegetable oils, most commonly coconut/palm or their fractions). Thanks to its origin, it belongs to the milder cleansing agents suitable for natural and “low irritant” cosmetics. In formulations it increases foam formation, improves degreasing and at the same time helps to stabilize the foam in combination with other surfactants.
Key benefits
- Mild non-ionic surfactant suitable for more sensitive skin (compared to more aggressive sulfates).
- Good cleansing performance while maintaining a gentler profile.
- Improves foaming and foam stability in surfactant blends.
- Compatible with most surfactants – suitable for synergistic blends.
- Suitable for natural formulations (sugar surfactants / alkyl polyglucosides).
Suitable for products such as
- Shampoos and gentle cleansing gels.
- Shower gels and body cleansing emulsions.
- Facial cleansing gels (also for more problematic skin within a properly adjusted formulation).
- Children’s cleansing cosmetics (with correct dosage and pH of the final product).
- Bubble bath, liquid soaps, intimate hygiene products (according to target pH and surfactant combination).
Use in formulation
- Soluble in: water (supplied as an aqueous solution of the surfactant).
- Miscible with: anionic, amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants; works well in blends with betaines and other sugar surfactants.
- Recommended dosage: as a guideline 5–25 % depending on product type and target active matter (when blending, take into account that this is a solution, not 100 % active matter).
- Technological notes: may increase viscosity or conversely thin the system depending on composition; thickening often requires a combination of thickeners or an appropriate surfactant blend.
Safety and storage
- Avoid contact with eyes; in case of contact, rinse with water.
- Use basic protective equipment when working and avoid unnecessary splashing.
- Store in a well-closed container, in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
- Keep out of reach of children.
FAQ
Some perfumes, solubilizers and extracts disrupt the micellar structure of the surfactant mixture and the viscosity decreases. It helps to adjust the surfactant ratios, choose a different solubilizer or use a compatible thickener.
It can be, but clarity depends on the entire formulation (fragrance, extracts, preservative, pH). When a “crystal clear” gel is required, it is often necessary to fine-tune solubilization and the composition of the surfactant blend.
With sugar surfactants, thickening with salt often does not work the same way as with sulfates. You will usually set the viscosity better with a combination of surfactants (e.g. with betaine) and a suitable polymeric thickener.
Some surfactant blends and perfumes have temperature-sensitive solubility – in cold conditions haze can form. It helps to change the fragrance/solubilizer, adjust surfactant ratios or add a stabilizing component.
It is possible, but some cationic components may worsen clarity or stability. It is recommended to run small compatibility tests and monitor changes in viscosity, haze and sedimentation over time.

From our blogTop notch for making natural shampoo — Perfect surfactant!! An absolutely key item when making natural shampoo. The hair is softer and stays free of grease for considerably longer. From my experience it has the best stability and foaming when the pH is kept between 5.2 - 5.5.
