Product description

Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate is a milder anionic surfactant from the sulfosuccinate group. It is manufactured in multiple steps: the fatty alcohol (lauryl) is first chemically attached to the succinate backbone (esterification), followed by sulfonation and finally neutralization to the disodium salt. Compared to classic alkyl sulfates, it has a larger molecule, which in practice results in a gentler cleansing profile – it still produces a pleasant foam and removes common soils well in rinse-off products.

Key benefits

  • Milder cleansing – suitable for formulations where you want a gentler surfactant base.
  • Good foaming – supports rich, more creamy foam.
  • Pleasant tolerability – often chosen for products for more sensitive skin (rinse-off).
  • Balanced cleansing profile – less of a “degreasing” feel than with stronger sulfate surfactants.
  • Suitable for surfactant blends – works well in combination with amphoteric and nonionic surfactants.

Suitable for products such as

  • Shampoos and mild cleansing bases for hair
  • Shower gels and body wash gels
  • Cleansing gels for the face (rinse-off formulations)
  • Liquid soaps and hand wash products
  • Baby and sensitive cleansing products (depending on the overall formulation)

Use in formulation

  • Water-soluble – intended primarily for the aqueous phase and surfactant systems.
  • Compatible with amphoteric surfactants (e.g. betaines) as well as nonionic surfactants (e.g. glucosides) – suitable for fine-tuning mildness, foam and viscosity.
  • Mixable with common humectants and thickening systems for cleansing products (selection depends on target clarity and pH).
  • Practical tip: for a more “creamy” foam and better slip, it is often combined with an amphoteric surfactant and a moisturizing component.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for rinse-off products; avoid contact with eyes during handling.
  • For sensitive skin, always adjust the overall mildness of the formulation (surfactant combination, humectants, pH).
  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry place, protected from moisture and contamination.

Is Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate a “sulfate-free” surfactant?

Chemically it is not a classic alkyl sulfate (like SLS/SLES), but a sulfosuccinate. In marketing it is often classified among the gentler alternatives, but whether it is “sulfate-free” depends on how you have set the labelling rules in the formulation and in product communication.

Can it be thickened with table salt (NaCl) like other surfactants?

The “salt curve” does not always work the same way as in some sulfate systems. Viscosity depends on the entire surfactant composition, electrolyte content and pH; it is often more reliable to use thickeners designed for surfactant systems.

How does it behave in the presence of cationic polymers or conditioners?

As an anionic surfactant, it can form complexes with cationic components, which may affect clarity or viscosity. If you use cationic polymers, test stability, clarity and sensorial properties at the final pH.

Is it suitable for clear (transparent) gels?

It can be, but clarity always depends on the type of thickening, salt content, fragrance and other additives. When targeting transparency, it is worthwhile to work with a compatible thickening system and minimize components that cause cloudiness of the solution.

Can it also be used in solid shampoos or bath products?

Yes, especially if it is available in solid/powder form. For solid products, monitor dusting, hardness and brittleness of the mass – a combination with other solid surfactants and suitable binders often helps.
