Peeling cubes

Back 08. 09. 2022

Peeling cubes are a great single-use dose of smoothing exfoliation. One or two cubes per bath are enough

Easy to prepare yet very effective – these are peeling cubes that you will use not only in the bath, but they are also suitable for the shower. Their preparation is not difficult at all and even beginners can manage it. Thanks to the wide range of available colourants and fragrances, you can create peeling cubes exactly according to your ideas.

PEELING CUBES - INGREDIENTS

To make peeling cubes you need several basic ingredients, first and foremost exfoliating particles, in our case the exfoliant is sea salt, and the recipe also requires a soap base and an oil. Fragrance and colour are only supplementary, but thanks to them you will turn ordinary peeling cubes into an irresistible gift.

Name of ingredient Content in %
Sea salt finely ground 52,80
Soap base ZENIOSOAPBASE non-sweating, clear 38,00
Neutral oil MCT caprylis 8,00
Essential oil 1,20
Mica powder as needed
Fine cosmetic glitter as needed

We have prepared four beautiful pastel combinations of colours and fragrances for you, but your imagination has no limits and you can create peeling cubes exactly for yourself.

Mica, Lime green Essential oil pine
Mica, Bonny buttercup yellow Essential oil Ylang ylang
Mica, Soft amethyst purple Essential oil lavender
Mica, Sunset dazzler pink  Essential oil geranium

PEELING CUBES - PROCEDURE

1. Disinfect all tools, packaging and containers, for example with ethanol.
2. Prepare the individual ingredients and the mould in advance – after combining with the other ingredients, the mixture for the peeling cubes sets very quickly, and you will therefore not have time to weigh more ingredients.
3. Into one container weigh the sea salt, into another container weigh the mixture of oil, mica powder, glitter and essential oil, also prepare the silicone mould.
4. Into a third container (heat resistant) weigh the soap base. Place the container in the microwave for a few seconds (take care that the soap does not boil over) or into a water bath until the base has melted.
5. Into the melted base immediately add the oil mixture and stir well, then add the salt, stir quickly and immediately fill into the prepared mould. After the addition of salt and oil the mixture sets very quickly, so it is not worth waiting.
6. Let the mixture set, then remove the solid mass from the mould and you can cut it into smaller pieces or leave it larger – and your peeling cubes are ready.

PEELING CUBES - TIPS AND TRICKS

When making peeling cubes, a bit of skill and preparation in advance is needed, since the mixture after adding the salt really sets quickly, but even beginners do not have to be afraid of the production. If it happens that the mixture sets too much, you can heat it once again. In this case a water bath is more suitable, since rapid heating in the microwave is quick, but the added essential oils suffer from it because they are heat sensitive. They may be released from the product more quickly or may degrade.

When adding the oil mixture to the melted soap base, it may happen that part of the oil, even after stirring, is present on the surface of the soap base. In this case, quickly stir the mixture once more and continue further in the recipe. The added salt will then help to get the oils into the soap base.

It is good to have the silicone mould prepared in advance when working, which thanks to its elasticity will make it easier for you to remove the finished peeling cubes. You can also choose other types of moulds, but bear in mind that it will be more difficult to remove the peeling cubes from rigid moulds (you can try lining them with baking paper).

If the mixture is not sufficiently stirred before pouring into the mould, it may happen that part of the oil remains in the bottom of the mould. This does not prevent you from using the peeling cubes, you will only lose part of the oil.

PEELING CUBES - INGREDIENTS AND THEIR ROLE

Below we will introduce the individual ingredients that make up the peeling cubes. We will pause at their role in the recipe and we will also talk about their possible replacements or substitutions.

SEA SALT

The basis of the peeling is sea salt. In this case, finely ground sea salt was chosen, coarse sea salt has particles that are too large and could irritate the skin when using the product. Sea salt is great because it contains many mineral substances and helps to remove dead skin cells. At the same time, it acts as a natural preservative in the product.

However, it is not the only salt that can be used to make peeling cubes. Finely ground Himalayan salt is also a good alternative, you only have to bear in mind that Himalayan salt has a pink colour, and this will also affect the final colour of the product if you will be using other colourants.

A great choice is also Epsom salt. Since it is fairly finely ground and has a white colour, your mica powders will stand out beautifully and Epsom salt is also excellent for tired or aching muscles.

You can also choose other exfoliating substances besides salt. Classic white crystalline sugar is popular, but feel free to use brown sugar as well. Furthermore, for example, ground pumice powder is available, which is fairly fine, but has a greyish colour, which may not suit everyone.

There are also various ground shells that can be used as an exfoliant. However, when using them, add a preservative to the product, as it may go mouldy if you leave it in contact with water for a longer time, for example in a soap dish in which water has remained.

You can also play with the proportion of salt in the recipe. If you want firmer cubes, increase the content of salt and soap base at the expense of the oil. Conversely, you will obtain softer cubes, which you can mash with your fingers into a peeling, by reducing the amount of soap base and adding more oil and salt.

SOAP BASE

The base that binds all ingredients in the recipe together and provides cleansing effects is the soap base. You can use virtually any type of soap base. Clear or white soap bases are particularly suitable, as they allow the added mica powders to stand out. If you cannot decide on a particular soap base, choose bases that set more slowly, which will make it easier for you to work with the peeling mixture.

The amount of soap base in the recipe affects the firmness of the finished peeling cubes, allowing you to prepare cubes exactly tailored to your needs.

MCT CAPRYLIS - NEUTRAL OIL

An excellent oil that can also withstand heat treatment well is MCT caprylis. It is a neutral oil without colour and fragrance, which makes it great for combining with colourants and essential oils, since it does not mask their scent. At the same time it is very resistant to oxidation, so your products will stay fresh for longer.

Besides MCT caprylis you can use any other vegetable oil. It is better to choose oils without a more pronounced scent or colour if you want to add your own colourants and essential or fragrance oils to the product. Try, for example, fractionated coconut oil, which is colourless.

ESSENTIAL OIL

To fragrance the whole product, essential oils were used. We have prepared four combinations of essential oils and mica powders for you. However, you can use any essential oil, but observe the dosage stated in the IFRA document for each oil to avoid an allergic reaction to an excessively high dose of oil.

You can also add fragrance oils to the peeling cubes, which will offer you an even wider palette of scents, including fruity ones. You can really choose from a very diverse range of scents and peeling cubes are a great place to experiment with new fragrances.

MICA POWDER

To colour the peeling cubes, mica powder was used, specifically four different colours that provided pleasant pastel shades. You can add any amount of mica powder to the product to achieve the shade you desire.

Do you want something more sparkling? Feel free to increase the amount of cosmetic glitter in the product. You have at your disposal a truly wide palette of multicoloured glitters. Alternatively, try two-tone pigments, which provide reflections of two colours at the same time.

A woman in the shower uses peeling cubes and rubs them over her back.

WARNING

As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, the final result can be influenced by many factors, such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients or their storage.

Before you use any ingredient to make a cosmetic product, get acquainted with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions and safe handling. Each ingredient may have the potential to trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using the product we recommend checking whether you are not allergic to any of the ingredients or the overall product, for example by a skin test.

If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or you have other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professional before applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure ingredient or a commercially available product.
