Product description

Neutral oil MCT Caprylis 60/40 is a light, stable and sensorily very pleasant esterified oil based on triglycerides of medium-chain fatty acids. It is obtained by processing vegetable fats rich in caprylic acid and capric acid, most commonly from coconut oil or palm kernel oil, with the fatty acids being fractionated, purified and subsequently esterified with glycerin to yield the final caprylic/capric triglycerides.
In cosmetic formulations it is used as a neutral carrier oil, a light emollient, a dispersing component and a stable lipid phase. Compared to classic vegetable oils, it has a very low content of accompanying substances, an almost neutral odour, a light appearance and high oxidative stability. It does not leave a heavy greasy film, spreads well and helps improve slip, softness and comfort of cosmetic preparations.
The designation 60/40 expresses the typical ratio of medium-chain fatty acids, approximately 60 % caprylic acid C8 and 40 % capric acid C10. Thanks to this composition, Caprylis is suitable for modern formulations where a light non-greasy feel, good spreadability and high stability of the lipid component are required.

Key benefits

  • Light neutral oil – suitable as a basic lipid component in a wide range of cosmetic products.
  • Non-greasy sensory profile – leaves the skin soft, smooth and pleasant to the touch without a heavy greasy film.
  • High oxidative stability – thanks to the low content of unsaturated fatty acids it is more stable than many pressed vegetable oils.
  • Excellent spreadability – improves the slip of creams, balms, oil serums and massage blends.
  • Almost neutral odour and colour – does not mask the natural character of actives, butters, extracts or fragrances used in the formulation.
  • Suitable carrier for active substances – combines well with oil-based extracts, lipophilic vitamins and fat-soluble components.
  • Improves the texture of emulsions – contributes to a lighter, less greasy and more elegant feel on the skin.
  • Also suitable for sensitive formulations – used in products where a simple, stable and sensorially clean oil phase is desired.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial and body oils,
  • oil serums and anhydrous facial blends,
  • light emulsion creams and body milks,
  • massage oils and wellness blends,
  • lip balms, body balms and regenerating ointments,
  • cleansing oils and oil cleansing blends,
  • hair oils, end serums and leave-in products,
  • suncare and after-sun cosmetics as a light lipid component,
  • colour cosmetics, lipsticks, glosses and creamy make-up products,
  • carrier oil blends for fat-soluble cosmetic extracts.

Use in formulation

  • Caprylis is soluble in oils and forms part of the oil phase of the formulation.
  • It is miscible with vegetable oils, butters, waxes, oil-based extracts, squalane, esters and other lipophilic components.
  • It is compatible with emulsion systems of the oil-in-water and water-in-oil type, depending on the emulsifier used and the overall composition of the formula.
  • It is not miscible with water; in water-based products it must be incorporated into the oil phase or stabilised with a suitable emulsifying system.
  • In anhydrous products it can be used as a main carrier oil or as a component to lighten heavier oils and butters.
  • In emulsions it helps soften the feel on the skin and reduce the greasiness of the final product.
  • In oil serums and massage blends it combines well with richer oils, to which it imparts better spreadability and a lighter slip.
  • In balms and more solid products it can reduce tackiness and contribute to smoother application.
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C), especially if the formulation contains heat-sensitive oil-based extracts, vitamins or fragrance components.
  • The usual recommended dosage depends on the product type: in emulsions often approximately 1–20 %, in anhydrous oil products, massage oils and cleansing blends it may constitute a higher proportion of the oil phase.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry, cool and dark place.
  • Protect from direct sunlight, moisture and excessive heat.
  • Use clean tools during handling to prevent contamination of the container.
  • When manufacturing cosmetics, follow the principles of good manufacturing practice, workplace hygiene and packaging cleanliness.
  • Before use in the final product we recommend carrying out a stability and compatibility test of the formula.
  • For products intended for sensitive skin we recommend a trial application of the finished product on a small area of skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

FAQ

What is the difference between MCT oil and regular vegetable oil?

MCT oil consists mainly of triglycerides of medium-chain fatty acids, whereas regular vegetable oils naturally contain a broader spectrum of fatty acids and accompanying substances. As a result, MCT oil is lighter, more neutral and more stable.

Is Caprylis suitable for products for oily skin?

Yes, in an appropriate amount it is also suitable for lighter formulations for oilier skin, because it has a drier, less greasy feel than many classic oils. However, the overall result depends on the entire formula.

Can Caprylis replace a vegetable oil in a formula?

It can replace part or all of the oil phase if the goal is a lighter and more neutral product. However, it must be taken into account that it does not provide the same profile of natural accompanying substances as pressed vegetable oils.

Is Caprylis suitable for macerating herbs?

Yes, it can be used as a stable oil base for macerating dried plant materials. Thanks to its neutral odour and good stability it is particularly suitable where the carrier oil should not significantly change the scent or colour of the macerate.

Does MCT oil leave a greasy film on the skin?

Compared to rich vegetable oils it feels lighter and spreads more quickly. The film on the skin is finer and less heavy, although the exact feel depends on the dosage and on the combination with other components.

Is Caprylis suitable for hair care cosmetics?

Yes, it is used in hair oils, end serums and leave-in products, where it helps improve slip, shine and spreadability without significantly weighing the hair down.
