Product description

Euxyl PE 9010 is a cosmetic preservative system based on phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, designed for broad spectrum antimicrobial efficacy against bacteria, yeasts and moulds. The combination of ingredients reduces the surface tension of the cell membrane of microorganisms and enhances the effect of phenoxyethanol, making Euxyl™ PE 9010 extremely effective at low doses while being gentle on the formulation. Stable to hydrolysis, temperature and pH and ideal for clear and transparent gels. Euxyl PE 9010 is a formaldehyde-free preservative and formaldehyde-releasing agent free.

Phenoxyethanol(90%), Ethylhexylglycerin (10%) (stabilized with synthetic alpha-tocopherol)

Physical properties

Appearance: clear, colourless to slightly yellowish liquid with a characteristic odour. Solubility: limited in water (ca. 1 % at 20 °C); soluble in polar solvents (propylene glycol, propanol, acetone); medium in polyalcohols (glycerol, sorbitol); low in pure aliphatic solvents. Surface tension: a 1 % solution significantly reduces the surface tension of water (promotes diffusion into the phase). Foaming: non-foaming (1 % in water). Stability: stable to hydrolysis, temperature and over a wide pH range (effective up to pH ~12).

Key benefits

  • Broad spectrum protection (bacteria, yeasts, moulds) with rapid kinetics of action.
  • Mild to formulations - suitable for sensitive systems and transparent gels.
  • High stability to pH, heat and hydrolysis; low risk of staining or interactions with pigments.
  • Salt tolerance; with very high surfactant loadings, efficacy may decrease.
  • Good workability - liquid form, easy incorporation even at lower temperatures.

Suitable for products such as

Leave-on and rinse-off products: skin and body creams/milks, serums and gels (including transparent gels), micellar and cleansing products, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, wet wipes.

Use in formulation

Recommended dosage: 0,5-1,0 % (leave-on and rinse-off).

Maximum permitted regulatory use: approximately 1,11 %

Compatibility: the preservative is miscible with polar solvents (e.g. propylene glycol), has limited solubility in pure water (approx. 1 % at 20 °C).

Formulation: add Euxyl PE 9010 to the aqueous or aqueous-glycol phase with stirring; pre-dissolution in propylene glycol is suitable to improve distribution. It is recommended to add during cooling (at temperatures below 40 °C). For products with a higher microbial risk (natural raw materials), consider the upper limit of the dose and always perform a challenge test.

Safety and storage

Safety limits for use are governed by current legislation for cosmetics in the target markets; in general, preservation up to 1.1% is considered safe in both leave-on and rinse-off products when used correctly. A minimum contact time of approximately 48 hours is required to achieve full disintegration of micro-organisms in already contaminated systems. Store in the original, tightly sealed container at room temperature, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.

FAQ

Is Euxyl PE 9010 suitable for transparent gels and serums?

Yes, this preservative is ideal for transparent aqueous and aqueous-glycol systems. It has limited solubility in pure water, so it is best to pre-dissolve it in propylene glycol and then incorporate it into the aqueous phase to achieve an even distribution without optical haze.

How does the high surfactant content affect the effectiveness of the preservative?

In formulations with a high proportion of ethoxylated (PEG) tensides, there may be a decrease in efficacy. For such systems, we recommend testing the upper dose limit and confirming product protection with a challenge test.

What pH and temperature range is suitable for this preservative?

The preservative is stable and effective over a wide pH range up to approximately 12 and is both thermally and hydrolytically stable. Incorporation during cooling below 40°C is recommended to maintain optimum distribution and minimize evaporation of volatile components of the formulation.
