Product description

French pink cosmetic clay is a natural mineral raw material with INCI Montmorillonite, Illite, Kaolin. It is obtained by mining natural deposits, then mechanically purified, dried and finely milled into a powder. No perfumes or colorants are used during production – the pink coloration is natural and results from the mineral composition and the ratio of the individual clays.
In cosmetics it is used mainly for gentle cleansing and a mattifying effect, while in formulations it also serves as a mineral filler that improves the “drier” skin feel.

Key benefits

  • Mattifying effect – helps reduce shine and leaves the complexion fresh.
  • Absorbs excess sebum and contributes to a cleaner skin feel.
  • Gentle cleansing – suitable for masks and cleansing powder blends.
  • Mineral filler – adjusts sensorial properties and improves the “dry touch” in anhydrous products.
  • Suitable for normal to oilier skin (within clay masks and cleansing products).

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial masks – cleansing and mattifying.
  • Powder masks and cleansing powders (mixed immediately before use).
  • Soaps – adjustment of appearance and slip (depending on the formulation).
  • Body and hair wraps (powder blends to be dispersed).
  • Deodorants and body powders – moisture absorption and a drier feel.

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils – used as a powder component (dispersion/suspension).
  • Miscible with: water, hydrolats and gels – forms a paste; in anhydrous blends it is used as the powder phase.
  • Compatible with: emulsions and surfactant systems (as a solid phase); for a more pleasant feel in masks it is often combined with humectants (e.g. glycerin).
  • Technological tip: for a smooth consistency, sieve the powder and incorporate gradually; first disperse it into a slurry in a smaller amount of liquid and only then add the remainder.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhaling fine dust; when working with the powder, work slowly and in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; in case of eye contact, rinse with water.
  • Store in a dry place and in a tightly closed container so that the raw material does not absorb moisture and odors from the surroundings.
  • For sensitive skin, choose a shorter mask application time and follow with hydration.

Composition

  • Montmorillonite (typically approximately 70 % ± 5)
  • Illite (typically approximately 24 % ± 3)
  • Kaolin (typically approximately 6 % ± 2)

Physical properties

  • Appearance: fine pink powder (natural mineral coloration).
  • Powder fineness: typically 90 % < 100 μm, 100 % < 150 μm.
  • Behavior in formulations: in low-viscosity systems it may sediment over time – appropriate thickening or use in products with higher viscosity is helpful.

FAQ

Why should a clay mask not be allowed to dry completely “to dust”?

A completely dried mask can unnecessarily increase the feeling of tightness. In practice it is often recommended to gently moisten the mask during the application time or to rinse it off before it fully dries.

Is it better to prepare clay masks in advance or always fresh?

The simplest and most hygienic option is a powder blend that you disperse only immediately before use. Ready-made water-based masks in a jar require an appropriate preservation system and clean manufacturing practice.

Can I use the clay also around the eyes?

The area around the eyes is very sensitive and easily irritated. With clay masks it is usually recommended to avoid this zone and keep a distance from the lashes and eyelids.

How can I achieve a creamier feel from a clay mask without lumps?

Sifting the powder and incorporating it gradually helps. A creamier feel can also be achieved by adding a small amount of humectant or a gel-forming base so that the mask spreads more easily.

Why can the color of pink clay differ slightly between batches?

With natural mineral raw materials, slight variability in shade is common. It is related to natural differences in the deposit and to the proportion of minerals that influence the color.
