Product description

French red cosmetic clay is a natural mineral raw material with INCI Illite, Kaolin. It is obtained by extraction from natural deposits, then mechanically cleaned, dried and finely ground into powder. The red colouring is natural - it results from the mineral composition and the presence of coloured mineral impurities typical of red clays.
It is used in formulations mainly for absorption of excess sebum, a matting effect and as a mineral filler that improves the sensoriality (softer, "drier" feel) in anhydrous products.

Key benefits

  • Mattifying effect - helps reduce shine and corrects the appearance of the skin.
  • Absorbs sebum and promotes a clean skin feel.
  • Gentle cleansing - suitable for masks and powder cleansing blends.
  • Mineral filler - improves slip and feel in soaps, powders and waterless products.
  • Also suitable for dry and sensitive skin with the right application time and subsequent moisturisation.

Suitable in products such as

  • Facial masks - cleansing and mattifying.
  • Powder masks and cleansing powders (mixing just before use).
  • Soaps - colour and sensory modification (according to recipe).
  • Body wraps and bath rituals (powder mixtures to mix).
  • Deodorants and body powders - promoting a drier feel.

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils - used as a powder ingredient (dispersion/suspension).
  • Miscible with: water, hydrolates and gels - when mixed forms a paste suitable for masks.
  • Compatible with: emulsions and tenside systems (as solid phase); in masks it is often combined with humectants for a more pleasant feel.
  • Technological tip: for a smooth consistency, sift and incorporate the powder gradually; first mix to a slurry in a smaller amount of liquid.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhaling fine dust; work slowly and in a well-ventilated area when handling.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; flush with water in case of contact.
  • Store dry and in tightly closed containers to prevent the raw material from binding moisture and odours from the surrounding area.
  • For sensitive skin, choose a shorter mask time and follow up with moisturising care.

Ingredients

  • Illite (typically approximately 75 % ± 5)
  • Kaolin (typically approximately 25% ± 3)

Physical properties

  • Appearance: fine red to brick powder (natural mineral colouration).
  • Powder fineness: typically 90 % < 100 μm, 100 % < 150 μm. [oai_citation:0‡Range of clays.pdf](sediment://file_00000000b7047243a7afad58d65402fe)
  • Behavior in formulations: may sediment in thin systems - thickening or use in higher viscosity products helps.

FAQ

How to adjust the mask so that it does not stretch or feel uncomfortable?

Shorter application time, moisturising during application and adding a moisturising ingredient (e.g. gel base) for comfort helps.

Why can the colour of natural red clay vary slightly between batches?

This is the natural variability of the mineral - the shade is influenced by the composition of the deposit and the ratio of mineral components.

Can red clay also be used in anhydrous products?

Yes, it is often used as a powder filler in body powders or in anhydrous blends where it helps with a "drier" feel and absorption.

What to do if the mask creates clumps?

Sift and mix the powder first in a small amount of liquid to a smooth slurry, then top up the rest. Stirring with a whisk also helps.

Can I combine red clay with other clays in one mask?

Yes, mixing clays is common - it will allow you to fine-tune the absorption, the feel on the skin and the final effect according to the goal of the formula.
