Product description

French pink cosmetic clay is a natural mineral raw material with INCI Montmorillonite, Illite, Kaolin. It is obtained by extraction from natural deposits, then mechanically cleaned, dried and finely ground into powder. No perfumes or dyes are used in the production process - the pink colour is natural and results from the mineral composition and the ratio of the individual clays.
In cosmetics, it is mainly used for its gentle cleansing and mattifying effect, while in formulas it also serves as a mineral filler that improves the 'drier' feeling on the skin.

Key benefits

  • A mattifying effect - helps reduce shine and leaves skin looking refreshed.
  • Absorbs excess sebum and contributes to clearer feeling skin.
  • Gentle cleansing - suitable for masks and cleansing powder blends.
  • Mineral filler - modifies sensoriality and improves the "dry touch" in anhydrous products.
  • Suitable for normal to oilier skin (within clay masks and cleansing products).

Suitable in products such as

  • Facial masks - cleansing and mattifying.
  • Powder masks and cleansing powders (mixing just before use).
  • Soaps - appearance and slip adjustments (as formulated).
  • Body and hair wraps (powder mixtures for mixing).
  • Deodorants and body powders - moisture absorption and drier feel.

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils - used as a powder ingredient (dispersion/suspension).
  • Miscible with: water, hydrolates and gels - forms a paste; used as a powder phase in anhydrous mixtures.
  • Compatible with: emulsions and tenside systems (as solid phase); often combined with humectants (e.g. glycerin) for a more pleasant feel in masks.
  • Technological tip: for a smooth consistency, sift and incorporate the powder gradually; first mix to a slurry in a smaller amount of liquid and then add the rest.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhalation of fine dust; work slowly and in a well-ventilated area when handling the powder.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; flush with water in case of contact.
  • Store dry and in tightly closed containers to prevent the raw material from binding moisture and odours from the surroundings.
  • For sensitive skin, choose a shorter mask duration and moisturise afterwards.

Ingredients

  • Montmorillonite (typically approximately 70 % ± 5)
  • Illite (typically approximately 24% ± 3)
  • Kaolin (typically approximately 6 % ± 2)

Physical properties

  • Appearance: fine pink powder (natural mineral colour).
  • Powder fineness: typically 90 % < 100 μm, 100 % < 150 μm.
  • Behaviour in formulations: in thin systems it may sediment over time - adequate thickening or use in higher viscosity products helps.

FAQ

Why not let the clay mask dry completely "to dust"?

A completely dry mask can unnecessarily increase the sensation of foaming. In practice, it is often recommended to gently dampen the mask during application or wash it off before it dries completely.

Is it better to prepare clay masks in stock or always fresh?

The easiest and most hygienic choice is a powder mixture that you mix up just before use. Ready-made aqueous masks in a container require a suitable preservative solution and clean manufacturing practices.

Can I use clay around my eyes?

The area around the eyes is very sensitive and easily irritated. With clay masks, it is usually advisable to avoid this area and keep a distance from the eyelashes and eyelids.

How to achieve a creamier feel from a clay mask without lumps?

Sifting the powder and working it in gradually helps. A creamier feel can also be achieved by adding a small amount of a humectant or gel base to help the mask spread better.

Why can the colour of pink clay vary slightly between batches?

With natural mineral raw materials, slight variation in shade is common. It is related to natural differences in the deposit and the proportion of minerals that affect the color.
