Product description

Glass medicine bottle, black glossy, black ribbed safety cap, 10 ml

A set for packaging small volumes of liquid cosmetics that are dispensed drop by drop. It consists of a black glossy glass medicine bottle with a volume of 10 ml, a plastic dropper insert and a black ribbed safety cap. The opaque black glass does not let light through, so it suits contents that are sensitive to light and oxidation: essential oils and their blends, perfume oils, oil-based face serums, concentrated oil blends with active ingredients, tinctures or samples of your own formulations for customers.

The set as a whole is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the dropper insert and the cap do not have one. The assembled set is therefore intended for cosmetics.

How the set dispenses and seals

  • Dropper insert – a clear polypropylene insert that is pressed into the neck of the medicine bottle. The contents are dispensed by tilting the bottle, drop by drop, without your fingers touching the contents. The long version is intended for glass medicine bottles of this type.
  • Safety cap – the black ribbed polyethylene cap with an 18/410 neck finish is screwed on over the fitted dropper insert and closes the bottle. Before the first filling, we recommend testing opening and closing dry.
  • Glossy black glass – it is completely opaque, so it protects the contents from light all the way round. You cannot see the level of the contents through the wall. When selling, it is therefore worth stating the volume on the label, and for your own use you should bear in mind that you will only find out the contents have run out when dispensing.

What it is suitable for

  • Essential oils and blends – a volume of 10 ml corresponds to the usual pack size of essential oils. The dropper insert allows precise dispensing into a diffuser, a carrier oil or a formulation.
  • Perfume and fragrance oils – concentrated fragrances are used drop by drop, and dark glass slows down changes in fragrance caused by light.
  • Oil serums and concentrates – serums for the face, the eye area or the cuticles with a higher proportion of active ingredients, where a small amount is dispensed.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – low-viscosity liquid preparations pass through the dropper insert without problems.
  • Samples and test batches – the small volume is suitable for trying out a formulation or for customer samples before buying a larger pack.

The dropper insert is intended for low-viscosity liquids. Thicker oils (for example castor oil or blends with a higher proportion of butters) pass through it slowly or not at all. For such contents, we recommend testing the dispensing on a trial bottle before filling the whole batch.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume of 10 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume stated in the parameters is the physical volume of the glass up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the dropper insert, which takes up part of the space once pressed into the neck, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents overflow when the dropper insert is fitted and the cap then does not seal.

Before fitting the dropper insert, wipe the neck of the bottle so that no oil remains on the thread. An oily thread impairs how the cap seats, and the bottle may leak during transport.

Good to know

  • Preparation before the first filling – before filling with cosmetics, we recommend washing the glass, disinfecting it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and letting it dry completely. The dropper insert and the cap only need to be disinfected and dried.
  • Plastic and essential oils – the polypropylene dropper insert and the polyethylene cap are common materials for this type of closure. Compatibility with a specific blend of essential oils or with alcohol-based contents should be tested on one piece before filling a larger quantity.
  • Reuse – the glass bottle can be used again after washing and disinfection. The dropper insert can be removed from the neck. When reusing it, clean it thoroughly or replace it with a new one so that residues of the previous contents are not carried over into the new contents.
  • Filling – preparations are filled into the bottle once they have cooled to room temperature.
  • Other closures – closures with the same 18/410 neck type and ready-made combinations of packaging and closure can be found in the Handymade range. If you combine them yourself, we recommend checking the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
  • Recycling – the bottle belongs in glass recycling, the dropper insert and the cap in plastics. Separate them from each other before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, the black opaque glass does not let light through. It is therefore suitable for essential oils, perfume oils and oil serums, whose fragrance and effectiveness deteriorate in light. The drawback is that you cannot see the level of the contents through the wall. You will only know how much remains when dispensing or by weight.
Is this set suitable for food?
No, the assembled set is intended for cosmetics. Only the glass medicine bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food. The plastic dropper insert and the safety cap have a declaration for cosmetic use only, so the whole set with the dropper insert and cap fitted is not recommended for packaging food, syrups or homemade oils.
How are the contents dispensed through the dropper insert?
The bottle is tilted and the contents flow out drop by drop through the opening of the dropper insert. The dropper insert is pressed firmly into the neck and is not removed with each use; only the cap is unscrewed. Low-viscosity liquids such as essential oils, light vegetable oils, tinctures or alcohol solutions pass through drop by drop. Thick oils and blends with butters pass through slowly.
How much can be filled into a 10 ml bottle?
The bottle is filled up to the nominal volume of 10 ml, not to the brim. The brimful volume is larger, but this difference serves as a reserve for the dropper insert, which takes up part of the neck once fitted, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents overflow when the dropper insert is pressed in and the cap then does not seat on a clean thread.
Can the bottle with the dropper insert be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be used several times after washing and disinfection with alcohol. The dropper insert can be prised out of the neck. When reusing it, it must be thoroughly cleaned of residues of the previous contents or replaced with a new one. The cap only needs to be disinfected and dried. Before the next filling, check that the dropper insert holds firmly in the neck and that the cap seals.
Which cap fits this medicine bottle?
The medicine bottle takes closures with an 18/410 neck finish, which is the neck size stated in the parameters. Besides the supplied safety cap, the bottle can also be combined with other closures with the same neck type from the Handymade range. If you combine them yourself, we recommend checking the seal and the dispensing with your specific contents, because the behaviour of the closure depends on the viscosity and composition of the preparation.
