Glyceryl Caprylate/Caprate is a multifunctional ester of glycerin and medium-chain fatty acids (C8/C10 – caprylic/capric), obtained from vegetable oils.Technologically, it is produced by esterification (reaction of glycerin with fatty acids), which creates a lipophilic component with partially surface-active behavior. In practice, it functions as a light emollient, co-emulsifier and at the same time as a multifunctional “preservative booster” (support of microbial stability in combination with a preservation system). Thanks to its structure, it improves spreadability, reduces greasy afterfeel and helps stabilize the texture – especially in emulsions and anhydrous products. It contains no PEG or EO/PO and is often sought after in “clean” formulations as well.
Not exactly. They are related raw materials – one is a mixture of C8/C10 esters, the other is more narrowly defined. In practice, they may differ in texture, HLB and “booster” behavior, so it is advisable to verify substitution with a small test.
Yes, at higher usage levels it can thicken the emulsion or change its creaminess. If flow or feel during spreading changes, reduce the dosage or adjust the ratio of oil phase to emulsifier.
Anhydrous products are not preserved in the same way as aqueous ones, but they can still deteriorate (e.g. contamination during use, oxidation of oils). This raw material is rather multifunctional and in anhydrous products it is used mainly for sensoriality and texture; in products with water it relies on a preservation system.
It is lipophilic and has a partially surface-active character, so with insufficient solubilization it can cause haze or slight opalescence. It helps to adjust the solubilizer, reduce the dosage or change the order of incorporation.
It may be suitable at low levels, but tolerance is individual and depends on the entire oil phase. For acne-prone formulations we recommend starting conservatively and testing the final formulation on a small area.
