Glyceryl Caprylate/Caprate is a multifunctional ester of glycerin and medium fatty acids(C8/C10 - caprylic/capric), derived from vegetable oils.Technologically, it is produced by esterification (reaction of glycerin with fatty acids) to form a lipophilic component with partially surfactant behaviour. In practice, it functions as a light emollient, a co-emulsifier and also as a multifunctional "preservative booster" (promoting microbial stability in combination with a preservative system).Due to its structure, it improves spreadability, reduces oily range and helps to stabilize texture - especially in emulsions and anhydrous products. It does not contain PEG or EO/PO and is often sought after in "clean" formulations.
Not exactly. They are related raw materials - one is a blend of C8/C10 esters, the other is more narrowly focused. In practice, they may differ in texture, HLB and "booster" behavior, so it is advisable to verify the interchange with a small test.
Yes, at higher doses it can thicken the emulsion or change the creaminess. If it changes the flow or feel when spreading, reduce the dose or adjust the ratio of oil phase to emulsifier.
Anhydrous products do not preserve in the same way as aqueous products, but may still be subject to deterioration (e.g., contamination in use, oxidation of oils). This raw material is rather multifunctional and in anhydrous products it is mainly used for sensory and texture; in aqueous products it relies on the preservative system.
It is lipophilic and has a partially surfactant nature, so it can create haze or subtle opalescence if not sufficiently solubilized. It helps to adjust the solubilizer, reduce the dose or change the incorporation order.
It may be suitable in low doses, but tolerability is individual and depends on the whole oil phase. For acne prone formulations, we recommend starting conservatively and testing the final formulation on a small area.
