Glyceryl oleate is a glycerin and oleic acid ester – a natural fatty acid typically obtained from vegetable oils (e.g. olive oil or sunflower oil). Industrially, it is produced by esterification (reaction of glycerin with oleic acid or its derivatives), yielding a component that behaves as a mild emollient, co-emulsifier and often also as a re-fatting (lipid-replenishing) additive, especially in cleansing products. In practice, it is used to make the product feel “softer” on the skin – it reduces the feeling of dryness after washing, improves slip and can help support the stability of emulsions or the texture of the finished product.
It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
It is most often used in cleansing products for its “re-fatting” effect, but in emulsions it can also function as an emollient/co-emulsifier – the decisive factor is compatibility with the emulsifying system.
Yes, lipid additives often reduce clarity. If a clear product is the goal, it is usually necessary to optimize the surfactant system and solubilization.
It can be used as a texturizing emollient, but the resulting “heaviness” and slip depend on the chosen oils and esters; in light serums, the dosage is kept rather low.
Rather not – lipids can slightly suppress foaming. Its main benefit lies in making cleansing milder and improving the feel after rinsing.
Typical signs are phase separation, viscosity change, loss of clarity or an unstable emulsion. Gradual titration of the dose and testing in combination with the specific emulsifier/surfactants helps.
