Macerates and extracts: herbal active substances for your formulation
An oil macerate is made by steeping herbs in a vegetable oil – as it steeps, the oil takes up their fat-soluble active substances, colour and aroma. You get a two-in-one raw material: the oil phase and the herbal action in a single step, without having to steep dried plants yourself. Our macerates use sunflower oil as the carrier and are typically dosed at 1–10% of the formulation, more in ointment bases.
Which herb for what
Calendula macerate is the most versatile – it softens and supports the skin's protective film, so it suits creams, lotions and balms for dry or sensitive skin. Chamomile soothes and belongs in baby care, comfrey is a classic of ointment and balm bases, and organic-grade arnica is a companion for targeted massage of hard-worked areas. Carotene gives an emulsion antioxidant protection and a subtle warm tint; the range's speciality is an active lipoextract of greater celandine, available from 50 ml up to a 10 kg pack.
Fermented and water-based extracts
Alongside the oil macerates you will also find extracts for the water part of formulations: organic fermented rice water for skin and hair, fermented Centella asiatica extract, active water-based extracts of red grape, horse chestnut and mallow in organic grade, a propylene glycol calendula extract and Multi-feel, a complex of seven plant extracts, in packs from as little as 10 ml. Water-based raw materials belong in the water phase and a finished product containing them always needs preservation – preservatives and other active substances are among the cosmetic additives.
Pack sizes and documentation
Most items come from 50 or 100 ml trial sizes up to 1-litre and 5-litre volumes for production, and the grape and mallow water extracts also in 10 l. Every batch comes with an SDS and a certificate of analysis. And if you would rather build your oil phase from scratch with a pure raw material, reach for the cosmetic oils.
Frequently asked questions
What is an oil macerate and how is it made?
A macerate is a plant infusion in oil: herbs steep in a vegetable oil for an extended time, and the oil gradually takes up their fat-soluble active substances, colour and aroma. Our macerates – calendula, chamomile, comfrey, arnica and carotene – use sunflower oil as the carrier, and you work with them just as you would with a regular cosmetic oil.
What is calendula macerate used for?
It is the most popular herbal macerate for creams, body lotions and balms for dry and sensitive skin – it softens, smooths and supports the skin's protective film. You can buy it from 100 ml at €4.19 up to a 5-litre canister, and for water-based formulations we also carry a propylene glycol calendula extract for the water phase.
How much macerate should I add to a cream or balm?
The usual dosage of oil macerates is 1–10% of the formulation, depending on the product type and the goal of the formulation – in ointment bases comfortably more. For sensitive-skin cosmetics, start at the lower end of the range. A macerate belongs in the oil phase – add it together with the oils and butters, not to the water part of the formulation.
What is the difference between a macerate and an extract?
A macerate is an infusion of herbs in oil and belongs in the oil phase of a formulation. An extract usually has a water, glycerine or propylene glycol carrier and goes into the water phase – like fermented rice water, Centella asiatica extract or the water-based extracts of grape, horse chestnut and mallow. Always protect water-based ingredients in the finished product with a preservative.
