Product description
Centella Asiatica, fermented aqueous extract, brings to the water phase of the formulation the soothing and regenerating effect of Asian pennywort (gotu kola) leaves in a form that is added directly to serums, tonics or creams without further dissolving. The extract is produced by fermentation with Saccharomyces yeast, so in addition to the plant component it also contains yeast lysate filtrate. It is suitable for care of sensitive, dry, acne-prone and mature skin, in scalp preparations, in body cosmetics and also in children's products.
What the extract brings to the skin
- Soothing – an ingredient for formulations for skin that reacts to external stimuli with redness and discomfort; typically serums, tonics and light creams for sensitive skin.
- Hydration and skin barrier restoration – the aqueous extract supports hydration and restoration of the skin's protective function.
- Elasticity and mature skin – in preparations for mature skin, it complements active ingredients targeting skin elasticity and regeneration.
- Skin microbiome – the fermented form is used in formulations intended to respect the natural balance on the skin surface.
- Antioxidant action – complements other antioxidants in daily care.
The extent of the effect depends on the dosage, product type and the rest of the formulation. The fermented extract is one of the active ingredients and the result is formed together with the others.
Use in formulation
The extract is water-soluble and belongs to the water phase. It is added at a temperature below 40 °C — in emulsions therefore only into the cooling emulsion, in serums, tonics and gels directly into the finished aqueous base while stirring. The recommended dosage is 1 – 10 %. Lower values suit tonics and mists, higher values suit serums and targeted preparations for sensitive or mature skin.
The extract itself is acidic, its pH ranges between 2.6 – 3.5. The finished formulation should be within the range of pH 4 – 7, so especially when dosing near the upper limit we recommend measuring the pH after adding the extract and adjusting if necessary.
When dosing at 5 – 10 %, expect a drop in the pH of the aqueous base. Add the extract before the final pH adjustment, so the value is set on the complete formulation.
It is compatible with anionic, amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants, so it can be incorporated into shampoos, cleansing gels and foams. It works well in both acidic and neutral environments and is intended for both rinse-off and leave-on preparations.
The extract contains the preservatives Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate, which protect the raw material in its packaging. They do not replace the preservation of the finished product. An aqueous formulation requires its own preservative system and we recommend verifying its efficacy.
Suitable for products such as
- serums and essences for sensitive and reddened skin,
- tonics and facial mists,
- light emulsions and creams, including preparations for the eye area,
- gel masks and soothing preparations after shaving or sun exposure,
- shampoos and scalp tonics,
- body lotions and shower gels,
- children's cosmetics.
The aqueous extract is not suitable for anhydrous products such as oils, balms or butters, as it will not dissolve in the oil phase.
Good to know
During the production of the extract, only water or vegetable glycerin is used as a solvent. The raw material is of plant origin, certified as Vegan, Kosher and Halal, free from GMO components and readily biodegradable.
The extract does not contain any of the fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of the Cosmetics Regulation and is not classified as hazardous under CLP. This facilitates its use in formulations for sensitive skin and in children's cosmetics.
In clear transparent products at higher dosages, we recommend verifying the effect of the extract on the appearance and scent of the finished formulation.
The fermented aqueous extract differs from the oily macerate of centella in its phase: the macerate belongs to the oil phase and is suitable for balms and oil serums, while the fermented aqueous form is handled as a water-phase ingredient and can also be incorporated into cleansing preparations with surfactants.
