Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a multifunctional plant cellulose derivative used as a thickener, stabilizer, film-former and rheology-modifier. It forms clear and transparent films and is characterized by thermoreversible gelation, which helps fine-tune the processing and texture of formulations. It is salt tolerant and available in a wide range of low to high viscosity grades for precise viscosity adjustment.

Technology tips:
The material is commonly used in cosmetics and skin preparations, it is generally considered to be well tolerated. Minimise dustiness and use normal protective plasters when handling. Preserve aqueous solutions/gels with a suitable preservative system. Store in the original, properly sealed container, dry and away from sources of heat and moisture.
Pour it slowly into vigorously stirred cold water or pre-disperse it in glycerin/propylene glycol/alcohol first and then add water. Allow to fully hydrate before fine-tuning pH and ingredients.
As a non-ionic polymer, it is generally compatible with anionic, amphoteric and non-ionic surfactants and works over a wide pH range of approximately 3 - 11. With high electrolyte content, viscosity may decrease, so testing is recommended.
Yes, it forms clear to slightly opalescent gels in water depending on concentration.
Both are nonionic cellulose ethers. HPMC has more pronounced film-forming and thermogelation, often yields firmer gels, and better solidifies the aqueous phase of emulsions. HEC gives a very smooth "slip" and is less sensitive to salts in some systems. The choice depends on the desired rheology.
Select a preservative system compatible with nonionic polymers and target pH (e.g., organic acids and their esters, phenoxyethanol systems).
