Isopropyl myristate, IPM 98 % is a light ester – it is produced by esterification of isopropyl alcohol and myristic acid (a fatty acid that can be derived from vegetable oils). In cosmetics it is used as an emollient and at the same time as a lipophilic solvent/carrier: it reduces the “heavy” greasy feel of the oil phase, improves slip and spreadability, and helps dissolve selected lipophilic components (e.g. fragrance or oil-based actives) into the oil phase.A typical property of IPM is a drier skin feel and faster absorption compared to heavier vegetable oils, therefore it is often used as a “lightening” component in richer emulsions and oil blends.
Yes. As a light ester it changes the character of the oil phase (polarity, viscosity), therefore at higher usage levels it may be necessary to fine-tune the emulsifier, co-emulsifier or the oil/water ratio.
Yes, it is often used specifically to reduce greasy feel and as a lipophilic carrier for fragrances. In practice it works particularly well in combination with other light esters or dry emollients.
Some people may react to certain emollients with worsening pore clogging. If you are creating products for problematic skin, keep to lower usage levels, choose light non-comedogenic alternatives and test on a small area.
Yes, it is a lipophilic solvent/carrier. However, always verify the solubility of the specific substance by testing in a small amount and monitor clarity, separation and stability after cooling.
IPM typically has faster spreading and a “drier” after-feel. In blends it can lighten heavier oils and reduce the feeling of greasiness without losing emolliency.
