Product description

Keratin is also a natural component of our hair. This protein is found not only in the structure of the hair, but also in the top layer of the skin or nails. It is the presence of keratin that helps to give hair or nails their strength and durability.

The properties of keratin are derived from the presence of various amino acids, especially cysteine. Cysteine contains a sulphur atom in its molecule and is therefore essential for a healthy hair and nail structure. It is thanks to its sulphur content that cysteine molecules form disulphide bridges and thus ensure the strengthening of hair, skin or nails.

Keratin is obtained from animal sources, such as feathers, and is found in the fleece of cattle. Its content in the body can also be increased by increasing protein intake or by applying it in the form of cosmetic products.

There is also a plant-based alternative to keratin, called phytokeratin. This is a protein hydrolysate (the proteins have been broken down into shorter chains), and the source of the protein is various cereals such as wheat, and phytokeratin may also contain proteins from corn or rice.

Keratin is especially appreciated by damaged hair, stressed by frequent colouring or heat treatment (e.g. ironing, curling, etc.). These processes also result in damage or reduction of keratin in the hair and thus reduce its strength or susceptibility to breakage. At the same time, keratin helps to keep the hair moisturised, nourishes it and improves its structure.

It is appreciated by damaged, frizzy, dry and brittle hair, including straight or curly hair.

At the same time, keratin, together with collagen, improves the elasticity of the skin, helping to retain water in the skin, thus improving its hydration and elasticity.

Keratin is a light brown to brown-orange liquid with a characteristic scent. The keratin solution is water soluble and has a pH of 4.7-6.7.

It is usually used in concentrations of 1 to 2 %. Keratin is thus mainly used in hair cosmetics such as shampoos, conditioners, masks or sprays, but it can also be used in smaller concentrations in skin cosmetics or nail care products.
