Product description

Macadamia oil, refined is a stable vegetable emollient obtained from the seeds (nuts) of the Macadamia integrifolia (macadamia) tree. It is most often first obtained by pressing the oil from the seeds and then refined (purification, neutralization, bleaching and deodorization) to make the result more colour and aroma neutral, stable and suitable for a wide range of cosmetic formulations. In practice, it is mainly used to soften, smooth and promote skin comfort without a heavy greasy film.

Active substances and natural ingredients

  • Palmitoleic acid (omega-7): typical of macadamia; contributes to a "sebum-like" sensory (feeling similar to natural sebum) and to a soft, smooth finish.
  • Monounsaturated fatty acids: promote pleasant spreadability and comfort on the skin; the oil is perceived as 'soft' and non-slippery.
  • Trace elements (depending on the degree of refining): naturally occurring tocopherols and phytosterols may be present in oils, but may be reduced in refined oils.

Key benefits

  • Softens and smooths the skin surface (instant "silky" feeling).
  • Reduces dryness - creates a protective lipid film and promotes skin comfort.
  • Improves the sensoriality of creams, milks and oil serums (less "heavy" feel compared to some thick oils).
  • Also suitable for unperfumed products - refining typically reduces the natural fragrance and colour, so it has less effect on the final aroma of the formula.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial oils and oil serums (alone or in blends)
  • body oils, massage oils, shower oils
  • creams, body lotions, emulsions (as part of the oil phase)
  • lip balms and protective balms for dry areas
  • hair products: oil packs, rinse-free oils/creams, serum for the ends
  • solid products: balms, sticks, butter creams

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: use approximately 1-10% in emulsions and oil products according to target texture.
  • Miscible with most vegetable oils, butters, emollients and esters.
  • Insoluble in water - belongs to the oil phase; in aqueous products only with the help of a suitable emulsifier.

Safety and storage

  • For external use only; avoid direct contact with eyes.
  • We recommend a tolerance test on a small area of skin before first use.
  • We recommend extra caution for persons with increased sensitivity to nuts.
  • Store well sealed, in a dry and dark place, out of direct sunlight and heat sources.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Is refined macadamia oil suitable for unscented cosmetics?

Yes. Refining typically reduces the oil's natural aroma, so it has less effect on the resulting product's fragrance and blends better with both perfumed and completely unscented formulas.

How do I use macadamia oil when I want a "lighter" skin feel?

Reduce the overall oil phase and combine macadamia oil with drier emollients (e.g. light esters or squalane). In emulsions, it also helps to choose emulsifiers and ingredients that reduce the oily feel (e.g. starches or micronized powders, depending on the type of formulation).

Is macadamia oil suitable for hair products even with fine hair?

Yes, but we recommend a lower dosage and application especially to the lengths and ends. For fine hair, it is advisable to choose a lighter rinse-free serum or emulsion and use the oil as a softening supplement rather than as the main "heavy" oil.

Can I use it in a product with active ingredients (e.g. retinoid, ceramides, niacinamide)?

Yes. In oil serums, it serves as an emollient carrier and refining ingredient. For retinoids, it is important to follow the active manufacturer's recommended dosage and stabilization conditions; for emulsions, ensure the correct pH (e.g., with niacinamide) and compatibility of the emulsifier with the actives.

How do refined and unrefined macadamia oil differ in cosmetics?

Refined oil usually has a more neutral scent and color and tends to be more versatile in formulations where you don't want to affect the aroma or shade of the product. Unrefined oil may have a more pronounced natural aroma and a higher proportion of natural minor constituents, but its properties may vary more between batches.
