Product description

Cosmetic Moroccan rhassoul clay (also known as ghassoul) is a natural mineral traditionally used in Morocco. It is extracted by mining in the Atlas Mountains, then mechanically purified, dried and ground into a fine powder suitable for cosmetic applications.
Rhassoul is particularly valued for its ability to bind sebum and impurities without aggressive degreasing - so it is often used for both skin and hair. In formulas, it acts as a gentle adsorbent and leaves the skin visually cleaner and velvety matte.

Key benefits

  • Gentle cleansing of skin and scalp - binds excess sebum and impurities.
  • Mattifying effect - helps to unify appearance and reduce shine.
  • Gentle sensory - improves "glide" and feel on skin in powder blends.
  • Promotes a smooth appearance - suitable for masks and wash pastes.
  • Mineral formulation - popular in minimalist, natural-toned formulations.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial masks - cleansing, mattifying, for combination and oilier skin.
  • Hair and body wraps - traditional "mud" treatments.
  • Cleansing powders and ubtan type mixtures, powder masks.
  • Washing pastes and gentle exfoliating mixtures (depending on particle size and formula).
  • Soaps - to change the feel and appearance (according to the recipe).

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils - work with it as a suspension/powder ingredient.
  • Miscible with: aqueous phases (forms a paste), hydrates, gels; in anhydrous products it is used as a powder additive.
  • Compatible with: tensides, emulsions, oils and butters (as powder phase); for a more pleasant feel in masks, it is often combined with humectants (e.g. glycerin) or a few drops of oil.
  • Technique tip: sift the powder and add gradually; to minimize lumps, it is practical to first mix it in a smaller amount of liquid to a smooth slurry and then add the rest.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhaling fine dust; work slowly and in a well-ventilated area when handling.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; flush with water if touched.
  • Store dry and in tightly closed containers to prevent the raw material from binding moisture and odours from the surrounding area.
  • For sensitive skin, try a shorter exposure time and lower concentration in the mask first.

FAQ

Is there a difference between the names rhassoul and ghassoul?

In practice, the names are used as synonyms for the same raw material; the difference is mainly in the transliteration/labelling by region and supplier.

Why can a clay face mask 'crack'?

This is typical as the mineral paste dries and shrinks. It helps to apply a thinner layer, shorten the application time or gently de-puff the mask with a hydrolate to prevent it from drying out completely.

Can the prepared clay paste be stored until the next day?

It is not recommended without preservation. When mixed with water, an environment suitable for microbial growth is created; it is always safer to mix a fresh batch.

Can rhassoul affect the colour of the finished product?

Yes, the natural mineral coloration can tint emulsions, soaps and powders. For colour sensitive products, test in a small batch.

What is the best way to combine rhassoul with acids (AHA/BHA) in one mask?

When combining with acids, work carefully: reduce the concentration of acids, shorten the time of action and always test both compatibility and tolerance on a small area. For sensitive skin, alternating products is preferable to mixing them in one mask.
