Product description

Shea butter, organic (BIO), unrefined is obtained from the kernels of the fruits of Vitellaria paradoxa, a tree traditionally cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa. After harvesting, the kernels are processed, dried, and then the fat phase is obtained by mechanical processing and pressing without refining, so the butter retains its natural character, colour and the typical accompanying substances.
Thanks to this, it is a raw material popular for the production of natural cosmetics, especially where nourishment, skin protection, softening and restoration of the skin barrier are desired.
It should be taken into account that this butter has a strong scent typical of unrefined shea butter in organic (BIO) quality – it is natural, raw-material-like and may influence the final fragrance profile of the product during formulation.

Key benefits

  • Nourishing and softening butter suitable for the care of dry, stressed and rough skin.
  • Helps to strengthen the protective skin barrier and to limit an excessive feeling of dryness.
  • Contains a naturally present unsaponifiable fraction, which is valued in balms, butters and protective products.
  • Forms a protective yet still pleasant film on the skin, which increases comfort after application.
  • Suitable for use in products for dry skin, lips, hands, elbows, heels as well as hair packs and masks.
  • In anhydrous cosmetics it improves the structure density, slip and nutritional profile of the formulation.

Suitable for products such as

  • body butters and whipped butters
  • lip balms and protective sticks
  • nourishing creams and night creams
  • hand and foot creams
  • ointments, post-bath balms and regenerative preparations
  • cold-process soaps
  • hair packs, masks and solid hair products
  • baby and protective cosmetics, if this is in line with the overall formulation

Use in formulation

  • Shea butter is miscible with vegetable oils, esters, waxes and other butters.
  • It is compatible with common lipid components used in emulsions as well as in anhydrous cosmetics.
  • It is particularly suitable for the oil phase, where it contributes to the richness and structure density of the product.
  • When heating, it is usually melted in a water bath; it is recommended to heat it only gently and to avoid unnecessarily overheating the whole batch.
  • In emulsions it is used according to the desired consistency and skin feel; in anhydrous products it can form a significant part of the formula.
  • When perfuming, its strong natural scent must be taken into account, as it may dominate especially in mildly fragranced or unfragranced products.
  • To refine the skin feel, it is often combined with lighter oils or esters so that the final formulation does not feel too heavy.

Physical properties

  • At room temperature it is a semi-solid to solid vegetable butter, which melts on contact with the skin.
  • The colour is naturally creamy to pale yellow, and may differ slightly between individual batches.
  • It is characterised by a strong natural scent, which is a common sign of an unrefined product.
  • In finished products it affects the hardness, spreadability and occlusive character of the formula.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a dry place, well closed, away from direct light and sources of heat.
  • Protect from repeated overheating and contamination during dispensing.
  • During formulation, monitor the natural odour of the raw material and its impact on the final fragrance of the product.
  • Before producing a larger batch, we recommend preparing a small test sample, especially if you combine the butter with delicate fragrances or active ingredients.
  • When selling the finished product, it is necessary to assess the safety of the entire formulation as a whole.

FAQ

Why does unrefined organic (BIO) shea butter have a more intense scent than refined shea butter?

Because it has not undergone refining, which usually reduces the natural odour, colour and part of the accompanying components. A more intense scent is a natural property of this type of butter.

How can the natural scent of shea butter be reduced in the finished product?

A combination with milder butters, lighter vegetable oils or the choice of a suitable fragrance profile that does not clash with the natural scent of the butter may help. It is always advisable to test a small sample of the formula.

Is this butter also suitable for whipped body butters?

Yes, it is one of the very common choices. However, in whipped products it is usually combined with liquid oils so that the final texture is more easily spreadable and pleasant on the skin.

Is shea butter also suitable for cold-process soaps?

Yes, it is often used as part of the fat phase in cold-process soaps, where it contributes to the caring character of the formula and to the feeling of comfort during use.

Can the structure of shea butter change over time?

Yes, with temperature fluctuations the butter may change its consistency or develop a slightly grainy appearance. This is a common physical phenomenon typical of natural fats and does not automatically mean a deterioration in quality.

For whom is this type of shea butter most interesting?

It will be most appreciated by formulators who prefer natural, minimally processed raw materials and want to preserve the authentic character of vegetable butter even at the cost of a more intense scent.
