Pentylene glycol (Pentane-1,2-diol or also Pentiol) is classified among organic substances – alcohols, thanks to the presence of two hydroxyl groups. Precisely because of them, pentylene glycol is indefinitely and easily miscible with water. It is obtained from natural sources, by processing corn and sugar cane, has Ecocert Cosmos and NATRUE certification. The sources for its production are not obtained from GMO raw materials.
It is a clear, viscous, odourless liquid, similar to glycerin. However, pentylene glycol is close to glycerin not only in appearance, but also in its moisturizing and hydrating properties. In cosmetics it helps to stabilize emulsions, since already at a dosage of 5 % it reduces the particle size of the emulsion (droplets of water and oil) by more than half. It is also used as a conditioner in hair care.
Pentylene glycol at the same time makes it possible to incorporate essential or fragrance oils, esters or other small amounts of oils or non-polar substances into water (the substances must first be mixed with pentylene glycol and then this mixture added to the final product). Pentylene glycol thus also serves as an effective solvent, solubilizer of organic substances.
Another important property of pentylene glycol is its antimicrobial nature. Pentylene glycol shows a synergistic (mutually reinforcing) effect with many other antimicrobial substances, such as preservatives. As a result, the addition of pentylene glycol makes it possible to reduce the amount of the remaining preservative raw materials used.
Pentylene glycol is an excellent helper for maceration of herbs. It does not dry out like classic alcohol and thanks to its properties it extracts from herbs substances that are soluble in water as well as in fats.

pH: without limit
Pentylene glycol is independent of the product’s pH (it tolerates acidic to alkaline pH). It is soluble in water and in oil.
