Product description

Oat oil Oat Lipid e replenishes the lipids in skin and hair that are lost with age and environmental exposure. It differs from common vegetable oils in its composition: alongside triglycerides, it also contains ceramides identical to those in the skin, free fatty acids, plant sterols, and natural antioxidants. In a formulation it therefore performs more roles than a plain emollient. It softens and soothes the skin, supports hydration and skin barrier repair, and in hair care it improves shine and makes detangling easier.

The raw material is the kernels of common oat (Avena sativa) of Northern European origin. The oil is not pressed; it is obtained by solvent extraction and subsequently refined and filtered. It absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves a non-greasy feel, which is an advantage in daily creams, hand preparations, and skincare for acne-prone skin.

What the oil contains

The manufacturer states a typical composition of approximately 90% neutral lipids, 10% polar lipids, and 1–2% ceramides. Free fatty acids account for around 9%, which is a relatively high proportion for vegetable oils. According to the manufacturer, this is a natural characteristic of this raw material, not a sign of degradation.

  • Ceramides – lipids that are part of the skin barrier and the hair cuticle. In the skin they decrease with age; in damaged hair they are reduced and the hair becomes dull and rough to the touch.
  • Free fatty acids and triglycerides – the emollient component that softens the skin and supports its hydration.
  • Plant sterols – according to the manufacturer, a beneficial component of the oil's lipid profile.
  • Natural antioxidants – according to a comparative study by the manufacturer, they increase the oxidative stability of the oil. The manufacturer states that the oil also helps stabilise other, less stable oils in a formulation.

Effects on the skin

The oil acts as an emollient and soothing ingredient in one. It replenishes lipids in the stratum corneum and, according to the manufacturer, thereby supports its ability to retain moisture. It is well suited to care for dry and mature skin, where natural lipids are decreasing.

For acne-prone skin, how the oil behaves in pores matters. The manufacturer presents results from a volunteer test in which the oil proved to be non-comedogenic, and recommends it as a functional emollient in anti-acne preparations. In a consumer study, the manufacturer also evaluated the oil in hand care for skin stressed by frequent washing.

According to the manufacturer's study, the oil is non-comedogenic and absorbs without a greasy film. It can therefore also be used in light daily emulsions, where common vegetable oils are often too heavy.

Effects on hair

In hair care, the oil acts as a conditioning ingredient. The manufacturer presents ex vivo studies on hair types 1 and 2, according to which leave-on application increased the ceramide content in the hair and protected it from depletion by UV radiation, in the shaft, the cuticle, and the cortex. In rinse-off application, the manufacturer measured higher shine and better combability. According to the manufacturer, the oil smooths the cuticle scales, leaving the hair smoother and less prone to tangling.

Use in formulation

The oil is oil-soluble and insoluble in water; it is added to the oil phase. In both O/W and W/O emulsions it is blended with the other oils before emulsification. It is processed at temperatures up to 80 °C. In anhydrous products it is added cold without further processing.

The recommended dosage is 1–5% in facial and body care and 0.5–5% in hair preparations. The finished formulation may have a pH in the range of 3.0–8.0.

In hair preparations, start at the lower end of the 0.5–5% range. Shine and combability were measured by the manufacturer in rinse-off application; ceramide protection in the hair in leave-on application.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial creams and serums for dry, mature, and acne-prone skin, where ceramide replenishment and a non-greasy feel after application are valued.
  • Hand creams and preparations for skin stressed by frequent washing.
  • Body lotions and oils with a focus on skin barrier repair.
  • Shampoos and conditioners for damaged hair, where the oil improves shine and makes detangling easier.
  • Leave-on hair serums and oil treatments for the ends.
  • Scalp preparations with a soothing effect.

Good to know

  • Colour – the oil has a yellow to brownish shade. In white emulsions it may show slightly at higher dosages; it is recommended to verify in the finished formulation.
  • Compatibility – according to available documentation, no restrictions; it combines without issues with common emulsifiers and oils.
  • Preservation – the oil itself contains no preservative, and anhydrous preparations do not require one. However, every formulation with a water phase requires a preservative.
  • Certifications – the oil is approved for NATRUE, COSMOS and ECOCERT Natural; it is vegan, kosher, and halal. It contains no fragrance allergens, preservatives, or GMO-derived ingredients.
  • Environment – according to OECD 301 testing, it is readily biodegradable.
  • Safety – the substance is not classified as hazardous under CLP. It is suitable for rinse-off and leave-on preparations for the face, body, hair, and scalp.

Frequently asked questions

Is oat oil Oat Lipid e water-soluble?
No, Oat Lipid e is oil-soluble and does not dissolve in water. It is added to the oil phase of emulsions or to anhydrous products such as oils, balms, and massage blends. It can be incorporated into water-based tonics and sprays only with the help of a solubiliser; otherwise the oil will separate from the water.
Is Oat Lipid e suitable for acne-prone skin?
Yes, the manufacturer recommends it as an emollient in anti-acne preparations and presents a volunteer test in which the oil proved to be non-comedogenic. It absorbs without a greasy film, making it suitable for light daily emulsions as well. The overall behaviour of the formulation on the skin also depends on the other ingredients and should be verified.
What dosage of Oat Lipid e is recommended for a cream and for hair care?
For facial and body care, 1–5% is recommended; for hair preparations, 0.5–5%. The range applies to both rinse-off and leave-on preparations; the specific dose depends on the product's purpose and composition. The figures are the manufacturer's indicative recommendation and should be verified in the finished formulation.
Can Oat Lipid e be heated during emulsion manufacture?
Yes, the oil can withstand processing at temperatures up to 80 °C, so it can be heated together with the oil phase and blended with the other oils before emulsification. The finished formulation may have a pH in the range 3.0–8.0. In anhydrous products such as facial oils and balms, it is added cold.
Does Oat Lipid e work in a rinse-off shampoo?
Yes, the manufacturer presents ex vivo studies in rinse-off application in which the oil improved hair shine and combability. In leave-on preparations, the manufacturer also reports that it increases the ceramide content in the hair and protects it from depletion by UV radiation. In shampoo, it is dosed in the range 0.5–5%.
