Product description

Sodium coco sulfate (often abbreviated as SCS) is an anionic tenside derived from fatty alcohols from coconut oil. Technologically, it is produced by first extracting the fatty alcohols from coconut oil, sulfating them (binding the sulfate group), and then neutralizing them to sodium salt. The result is a surfactant with a strong cleansing ability and good foaming properties, particularly suitable for rinsing products.
This version is in granular form - granules are generally easier to dispense, less dusty and in practice improve working comfort when producing solid or bulk formulations (e.g. solid shampoos, bath powders). When dissolved in water, longer mixing and time may be required to fully wet the granules.

Key benefits

  • Significant cleaning ability - suitable where the product is to have 'real washing power'.
  • Rich lather - promotes intense foaming in rinse formulations.
  • Granular form - more practical dosing, generally lower dusting compared to fine powder.
  • Suitable for solid and bulk products - granules are easier to incorporate into the mix than light powder.
  • Works well in tenside blends - allows fine-tuning of foam and fineness by combining with other tensides.

Suitable for products such as

  • Solid shampoos and solid wash cubes
  • Shower products (both solid and liquid, depending on the system chosen)
  • Bath powders and loose wash mixtures
  • Scrubs with rinse (scrubs) with a tenside base
  • Wash pastes and thicker rinse formulas

Use in formulation

  • Water soluble - in granular form it is recommended to allow more time for wetting and dissolving; gradual addition to the mixed aqueous phase helps.
  • Miscible with other tensides - often combined with amphoteric tensides (e.g. betaines) and/or non-ionic tensides (e.g. glucosides) for a finer profile.
  • Compatible with common moisturizers (e.g. glycerin) - may improve post-wash feel.
  • Handy tip for granules: if you are preparing a solid shampoo, granules will usually 'anchor' better in the mixture; if you are preparing a liquid product, use adequate agitation to avoid clumping.

Safety and storage

  • When handling, avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes and minimise inhalation of particles.
  • Although granules usually dust less than powder, when sieving, work in a clean, ventilated area and use appropriate protective equipment.
  • Store in a tightly sealed container, in a dry place, protected from moisture; wet granules may form clumps and are less easy to dispense.

Why choose granular instead of powder form?

Granules are usually more accurately dosed and less likely to 'fly' in the air when working. In practice, this improves production comfort, especially for bulk and solid formulations.

Is SCS suitable for formulations for sensitive skin?

It is a powerful anionic tenside, so sensitivity is usually addressed by the entire tenside system (combinations, humectants, pH) rather than the raw material itself. For sensitive skin, always test the final product.

Does the granular form affect lathering or performance?

Functionally, it is the same type of tenside; the difference is mainly in the processing. For liquid products, the difference may be in how quickly the raw material dissolves, not in the foaming itself once fully dissolved.

What to watch out for when storing SCS in granules?

Moisture is key. If granules get wet, they can clump and are less easy to dose. Always use a tightly sealed container and dry tools.
