Product description

Sodium coco sulfate (often abbreviated as SCS) is an anionic surfactant derived from fatty alcohols from coconut oil. Technologically, it is produced by first obtaining fatty alcohols from coconut oil, then sulfating them (attachment of a sulfate group) and then neutralizing them to the sodium salt. The result is a surface‑active substance with strong cleansing performance and good foaming, particularly suitable for rinse‑off products.

This version is in granulated form – granules are generally easier to dose, create less dust and in practice improve work comfort when manufacturing solid or free‑flowing formulations (e.g. solid shampoos, bath powders). When dissolving in water, longer stirring and time for complete wetting of the granules may be required.

Practical tip for granules: if you are making a solid shampoo, granules usually “anchor” better in the mixture; if you are making a liquid product, use adequate mixing to prevent clumping.

Safety and storage

When handling, avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes and minimize inhalation of particles.
Although granules usually create less dust than powder, when transferring work in a clean, ventilated area and use appropriate protective equipment.
Store in a tightly closed container, in a dry place, protected from moisture; granules that have absorbed moisture may form lumps and be more difficult to dose.

Why choose the granulated form instead of the powder form?

Granules are usually dosed more accurately and tend to “fly around” less in the air during work. In practice this improves production comfort, especially with powdered and solid formulations.

Is SCS suitable for formulations for sensitive skin?

It is a powerful anionic surfactant, so sensitivity is usually addressed more through the entire surfactant system (combinations, humectants, pH) than through the raw material itself. For sensitive skin always test the final product.

Does the granulated form affect foaming or performance?

Functionally it is the same type of surfactant; the difference lies mainly in processing. In liquid products there may be a difference in how quickly the raw material dissolves, not in the actual foaming once fully dissolved.

What should you pay attention to when storing SCS granules?

Moisture is key. If the granules become damp, they can form lumps and are more difficult to dose. Always use a well‑sealed container and dry tools.
