SLES (sodium laureth sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate) is an anionic surfactant commonly used in cosmetics and cleaning products. Due to its excellent foaming and cleaning properties, it is included in soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and shower gels. SLES is an affordable and effective ingredient that helps remove dirt and greasefrom the surface of the skin and hair. It is also used in industrial cleaning products.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (also Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate, Sodium Alkyl Ether Sulfate) is made from palm kernel or coconut oil. It is formed by the ethoxylation of SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and it is this process that gives it its milder nature, lower irritation and better skin tolerance, which is why it is more commonly used in products for both normal and sensitive skin.
SLES 26% is already diluted with water for better workability and has an ASM of 26. It is weaker than SLES 70% and therefore has a higher dosage. It is a thicker liquid with a light yellow colour.
Recommended dosage: 10%-20% (facial products), 15%-30% (shower gel/bath foam/shampoo)
EWG Raw Material Safety Score: 1-3 (The score for this ingredient is higher when used in inhalable product forms (e.g. sprays, powders) due to respiratory concerns. The score is lower if used in product forms that have a lower risk of inhalation (e.g. solids, liquids)
