Product description

Sodium alpha olefin sulfonate (INCI: Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate) is an anionic surfactant with strong cleansing performance and high foaming power, used mainly in rinse‑off cosmetics (shampoos, shower gels, cleansing gels). It is produced by chemical sulfonation of linear alpha‑olefins (typically with a chain length of C14–C16), followed by neutralization to the sodium salt. The result is a water‑soluble raw material that can maintain good performance even at higher mineral content in the water.

Key benefits

  • Very high foaming – creates a rich and stable foam.
  • Strong cleansing ability – effectively removes sebum, impurities and styling residues.
  • Stable performance even in harder water and in various surfactant systems.
  • Good compatibility in combinations with other surfactants when the formulation is properly designed.

Suitable for products such as

  • shampoos and hair cleansing products
  • shower gels and liquid soaps
  • bubble baths
  • facial and body cleansing gels
  • foaming scrubs and washing pastes
  • household cleaning products

Use in formulation

  • Water‑soluble; processed in the aqueous phase of the formulation.
  • Miscible with amphoteric and nonionic surfactants (e.g. betaines, glucosides), which help to reduce the final “degreasing” strength.
  • Compatible with humectants and water‑based actives; compatibility with a specific preservative depends on the system type and pH.
  • When combined with cationic substances, a decrease in efficacy or the formation of haze may occur (typical for anionic–cationic interactions).
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • In practice, the dosage is adjusted according to the product type, target cleansing strength and surfactant combination.

Safety and storage

  • Intended exclusively for use in rinse‑off cosmetic products.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; in case of eye contact, rinse eyes thoroughly with water.
  • When working with the raw material, observe safety principles and use suitable protective equipment.
  • Store in a dry place, in a well‑closed container and away from direct sunlight.

FAQ

Is sodium alpha olefin sulfonate the same as SLS or SLES?

No. It is a different anionic surfactant with a different chemical structure. Functionally, it may provide similar foaming and cleansing performance, but its behaviour in the formulation (e.g. skin feel or viscosity optimization) may differ.

Why is it sometimes considered a “stronger” surfactant?

Compared to many milder surfactants, it has a higher cleansing (degreasing) capacity. Therefore, it is often used in products for thorough washing of hair or body, or it is softened by combining it with amphoteric and nonionic surfactants.

How does it affect the clarity and viscosity of the finished product?

Clarity and viscosity depend on the overall surfactant system, pH, thickeners and the presence of electrolytes (e.g. salt). Changes in these parameters can lead to haze or to a significant change in viscosity.

Is it suitable for products for sensitive skin or for children?

For sensitive skin and in children’s products, milder surfactants are usually preferred. If it is used, it requires careful adjustment of the concentration, combination with milder surfactants and supplementation with moisturizing components.
