Solvents – pure, stable and safe carriers for effective formulations

The solvents category covers raw materials that help dissolve actives, fragrance components and colourants, improve the dispersion and transport of substances in the water or oil phase and help you reach a homogeneous, stable texture. The right solvent improves the sensory profile, the absorption and the overall usability of a product.

The range includes polyols (humectants with a solvent effect), glycols for perfuming and actives, alcohol solvents for fast-drying products, oil solvents/emollients for lipophilic substances and solubilisers for working fragrances and essential oils into the water phase without haze.

A tip from practice: choose the solvent according to the nature of the substance being dissolved (hydrophilic vs. lipophilic), the target pH and the final feel you are after (dry slip vs. a hydrating effect). For fragrances in water-based products, prefer solubilisers to classic solvents.

Polyols with a solvent and hydrating effect

Vegetable Glycerin 99.5% and Pentylene Glycol ECO improve dissolution in the water phase and bring a humectant benefit as well – dissolving and, at the same time, added hydration without stickiness when correctly dosed. Glycerine suits toners, serums and creams; Pentylene Glycol ECO also works as a preservation “booster”.

A glycol for perfuming and active ingredients

Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) is a proven solvent for fragrance blends and for actives that are harder to dissolve; it helps stabilise the scent and improves dispersion in emulsions and gel systems – an excellent choice for perfuming and for even fragrance release without haze. Suitable for body lotions, gels and diffusers (depending on the type of product).

Fast-drying alcohol solvents

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA 99%) is used in preparations that need to evaporate quickly and in technical production or sanitation steps. It offers fast drying, a degreasing effect and little residue in the formula. In cosmetics, use it judiciously and in line with safety rules.

Oil solvents and emollient carriers

Isopropyl myristate (IPM 98%) is a light lipophilic carrier for dissolving oil-based actives and perfumes into the oil phase; at the same time it reduces the greasy feel and improves slip – a dry “skin feel” and excellent spreadability without a heavy film. Suitable for body oils, dry oils and creams with a richer oil phase.

Solubilisers for clear water-based products

Symbio Solv Clear Plus and Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate let you bring essential and fragrance oils into the water phase or into low-oil gels while keeping them clear – stable, clear fragrance solutions with no haze and no phase separation. Frequently asked questions

When should I use a solubiliser instead of a classic solvent?

Whenever fragrances and essential oils go into the water phase. A solubiliser gives a clear solution with no haze or separation, while a solvent on its own would leave the product milky or let the oil float on the surface. The typical solubilisers in the range are Symbio Solv Clear Plus and Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate; the recommended dosage is listed with each product.

How do I choose a solvent for a particular active?

Go by the solubility of the active: hydrophilic substances prefer water-based solvents (glycerine, glycols), while lipophilic actives and perfumes call for oil carriers (IPM) – or a solubiliser if the finished product is to be water-based. Take the target pH into account too, along with the final feel you want on the skin – dry slip versus a hydrating effect.

Do polyols affect how a product feels?

Yes. Glycerine increases hydration, but at higher doses it can add stickiness; pentylene glycol is less sticky and also acts as a preservation “booster”. Glycerine suits toners, serums and creams. Adjust the dosage of both to the aim of your formulation and confirm it with a simple sensory test on a small sample.

Is IPA suitable for every cosmetic product?

No. IPA is a fast-drying alcohol with a degreasing effect; use it selectively – in sprays or local cleansing solutions, for example – and always respect safety and regulatory requirements. It comes into its own in technical production and sanitation steps rather than in everyday skincare.
