Product description

Vitamin E in the form of DL-alpha-tocopherol is a liquid oil-based antioxidant with high purity (approx. 96 %), used mainly to protect oils and the oil phase of cosmetics against oxidation. It is a synthetically prepared (DL) form of tocopherol, which is subsequently purified and adjusted for cosmetic use. In practice, it helps slow down yellowing, the development of an unpleasant rancid-oil odour, and the overall oxidative degradation of formulations rich in unsaturated lipids.

Key benefits

  • Antioxidant protection of vegetable oils, butters and the oil phase of emulsions.
  • Helps increase formulation stability when using sensitive, unsaturated oils.
  • Oil-soluble – easily incorporated into lipid systems.
  • Suitable for products where the goal is to slow oxidation and maintain raw material quality.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial oils and anhydrous serums.
  • Lip balms, protective ointments and sticks.
  • Body butters and oil blends.
  • Creams and body lotions (emulsions) – protection of the oil phase.
  • Cleansing oils and makeup-removing balms.

Use in formulation

  • Soluble in: oils, butters and ester emollients.
  • Miscible with: common lipids and oil-based actives; added to the oil phase or to the finished oil blend.
  • Compatible with: most emulsifiers and stabilisers; in emulsions it acts in the oil portion.
  • Recommended dosage: typically low percentages, depending on the sensitivity of the oils used and the aim of the formulation.
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).

Safety and storage

  • Work hygienically and use clean tools; minimise unnecessary contamination during dosing.
  • Limit prolonged exposure to air and light; prefer packaging that reduces light access (e.g. amber glass) and leave as little headspace as possible above the product.
  • Avoid repeated prolonged overheating; incorporation at a lower temperature helps preserve the quality of the antioxidant.

FAQ

Is there a difference between tocopherol and tocopheryl acetate in cosmetics?

Yes. Tocopherol is a directly active antioxidant in the oil phase, whereas tocopheryl acetate is a more stable ester; in a formulation it is selected according to the goal and the stability of the system.

Does vitamin E replace the preservative in a cream?

No. Vitamin E is an antioxidant (protection of lipids against oxidation), but it does not act as a preservative against micro-organisms in aqueous products.

Does vitamin E increase SPF or replace UV filters?

No. It is not a UV filter and does not replace tested UV filters. It is used for antioxidant protection of the oil phase and to support formulation stability.

Why is vitamin E often added to oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids?

Such oils oxidise more quickly. An antioxidant helps slow oxidative changes, which manifest as changes in the colour and odour of the oil component.

Can I use vitamin E in an anhydrous balm without an emulsion?

Yes. In anhydrous products it is used very often – it is added to oils and fats to reduce the risk of their oxidation during use.
