1,3-Propanediol is a 100% natural multifunctional cosmetic ingredient produced by biotechnological fermentation of plant-derived glycerin using non-pathogenic microorganisms. This process takes place without the use of GMO raw materials, synthetic solvents or preservatives, making the raw material completely bio-based and gentle to the skin as well as environmentally friendly. The product is a clear, colourless, odourless liquid obtained from renewable plant sources (palm and palm kernel oil from Southeast Asia). It is characterised by high purity, stability and excellent tolerability, which makes it suitable even for sensitive cosmetics. The product does not contain any added preservatives, colourants, fragrances, synthetic additives or perfume allergens.

Physical properties

1,3-Propanediol is a clear liquid with low viscosity and neutral pH. It is produced by fermentation of glycerin, followed by distillation and purification. It has a very low heavy metal content (< 10 mg/kg as Pb) and does not contain volatile organic compounds (VOC).
The product is not irradiated and does not contain nanomaterials.

Use in formulation

Recommended dosage: 1–10% depending on the desired function in the formulation.
1,3-Propanediol is miscible with water and with most common surfactants, emulsifiers and preservation systems. It is compatible with phenethyl alcohol, with which it demonstrably increases the antimicrobial effect of preservation.
It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
