Product description

Avocado oil, cold pressed, organic quality

Cold pressed avocado oil in organic quality is a rich vegetable oil for products designed to protect and soften dry and stressed skin over a longer period. It is pressed exclusively from the flesh of avocado fruits, mechanically and without solvents, and only filtered after pressing. The unrefined oil thus retains its natural colour, scent and accompanying compounds. In a formulation, it acts as the oil component of creams, body butters, balms and oil blends.

The base is oleic acid, which gives the oil a richer, more slowly absorbed character. It is complemented by palmitic acid and a significant share of palmitoleic acid, while linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid make up a smaller part.

Key properties

  • Skin softening – the oil forms a layer on the skin that reduces water evaporation. Skin feels smoother and more supple after use, most noticeably on dry, thickened or wind-stressed skin.
  • Rich feel on the skin – the prevalence of oleic acid together with palmitoleic acid makes the oil a heavier component. It belongs in products for the body, hands and feet; in light daily emulsions it is used in lower amounts.
  • Unsaponifiable fraction – the unrefined oil from the flesh retains natural accompanying compounds beyond the fatty acids themselves. These are precisely what set it apart from refined oil.
  • Oxidative stability – an iodine value of 78 – 95 corresponds to an oil with a prevalence of monounsaturated fatty acids. An antioxidant is nevertheless recommended in the finished product, especially at higher oil content.

Use in formulation

It is added to the oil phase of emulsions and heated together with the other oils and emulsifier. In cold processing, for example in oil serums or massage oils, it is blended with the other oils without further treatment. In balms and body butters, it softens the final texture alongside butters and waxes.

The amount depends on the type of product. In emulsions, it typically forms part of the oil phase alongside lighter oils; in anhydrous products it can make up the entire oil component. The higher the proportion, the richer the product will feel on the skin and the more slowly it will absorb. For light facial emulsions, a smaller share combined with a faster-absorbing oil is therefore recommended.

The unrefined oil has a deep colour and its own scent. In darker balms this is not an issue; a white cream will take on a slight tint at higher dosage. The scent can be masked by essential oils or a fragrance composition.

The oil does not need prolonged heating. Add it to the oil phase only after the wax and butter have melted, and hold the temperature only as long as emulsification requires. This way, the unrefined oil and its accompanying compounds are not unnecessarily stressed by heat.

In cold process soap it is used as part of the oil blend. When calculating the lye, use a saponification value of 170 – 202 mg KOH/g.

Suitable for products such as

  • creams and body lotions for dry and sensitive skin,
  • body butters, balms and lip balms,
  • massage oils and oil blends for the body,
  • hand and foot creams, preparations for cracked skin,
  • hair oils and masks for dry, brittle hair,
  • cold process soap as part of the oil blend.

Good to know

The oil is oil-soluble and does not mix with water. It cannot be incorporated into toners or hydrogels without an emulsifier or solubiliser.

It contains no palm oil or ingredients of animal origin, is suitable for vegan formulations, and is not tested on animals by the manufacturer. It also contains none of the allergens that Annex III of the Cosmetic Products Regulation requires to be declared on the label. The supplier also declares it as suitable for food use.

Frequently asked questions

Is avocado oil suitable for facial cream?
Yes, avocado oil is also used in facial creams, primarily for dry skin. Due to its richer character, it is recommended as part of the oil phase alongside a lighter oil, not as the sole oil in a light daily emulsion. For oily skin, its proportion is reduced.
Can avocado oil be heated during emulsion production?
Yes, avocado oil tolerates heating of the oil phase during standard emulsion production. However, it only needs to be heated to the temperature and for the time required to melt the wax or butter and combine with the water phase. Prolonged heating unnecessarily stresses the unrefined oil and its accompanying compounds.
Will unrefined avocado oil tint the finished product?
Yes, at a higher proportion, unrefined avocado oil may tint a light emulsion or balm. It retains its deep colour as it has not undergone refining or bleaching. In darker balms or at lower dosage, the colouring is practically imperceptible.
Is avocado oil suitable for anhydrous products?
Yes, avocado oil is among the oils well suited for anhydrous products. In balms, body butters and oil serums, it can form the entire oil component or the greater part of it. An anhydrous product does not require a preservative, but an antioxidant is recommended to help the oil resist oxidation for longer.
What is the difference between cold pressed and refined avocado oil?
Cold pressed avocado oil retains its natural colour, scent and accompanying compounds, while refined oil is pale and almost odourless. Unrefined oil is therefore chosen where its natural components are desirable. Refined oil makes sense in products that are intended to remain white and scent-free.
