Product description

A plastic bottle with a capacity of 500 ml and a flip-top cap is a packaging solution for liquid cosmetics dispensed by tilting and gently squeezing the bottle: shampoos, shower gels, conditioners, liquid soaps, and body lotions. The bottle is made from PET, a lightweight plastic, making it suitable for the shower, bathroom, or travel where glass would be a hazard.

The transparent wall reveals the colour, clarity, and remaining amount of the contents. The matte white cap opens with one hand and snaps shut again after use, so there is no need to unscrew it every time. Both the bottle and the cap are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the set is not intended for food or beverages.

Which products the set is suitable for

A flip-top dispenses through a small opening in the cap, so it works best with products that flow on their own or with a gentle squeeze of the bottle.

  • Shampoos and shower gels – medium-viscosity surfactant products dispense cleanly and do not leak once the cap is closed.
  • Conditioners and body lotions – thinner emulsions pass through the opening without strong squeezing; with dense textures it is advisable to test dispensing in advance.
  • Liquid soaps and bath foams – the volume matches typical usage at a washbasin or bath.
  • Massage and body oils – oil flows more quickly; the dose is regulated by the angle of the bottle.

Thick creams, masks, and butters are difficult to push out of a narrow-neck bottle and residue tends to remain on the walls. A jar or pot is more practical for these.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling conditions. Total volume is the physical capacity of the bottle up to the rim of the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between them provides a reserve for the cap and for expansion of the contents when temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values are listed in the product parameters.

Viscous products such as shampoo or shower gel are best filled slowly along the inside wall of the bottle and left to stand for a moment before closing. Air bubbles will rise to the surface and the contents will not drop below the expected level once sealed.

What to know before filling

Before first use, it is recommended to wash both the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow them to dry completely. Residual water inside the container unnecessarily burdens the preservative system of the product.

PET does not tolerate high temperatures. Filling with hot material or boiling the bottle are not suitable; the material softens and deforms with heat. The product should only be filled after it has cooled down.

PET is compatible without issue with standard cosmetic formulations on a water, surfactant, or oil base. With a high proportion of essential oils, concentrated alcohol, or solvents, it is recommended to carry out a test with a filled sample. After several weeks, check whether the bottle wall has become cloudy or deformed and whether the cap still seals properly.

The transparent wall does not protect the contents from light, so filled products should be kept out of direct sunlight. Dimensions required for label design are listed in the product parameters. An label should be applied to a dry, degreased surface, ideally before filling.

Closure and other combinations

The bottle has a standard neck; the neck type is specified in the product parameters. Closures with the same neck type and further ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available from Handymade. Replacing the flip-top with a pump or spray changes the dispensing method, and not every texture is suited to a new closure. For custom combinations, we therefore recommend verifying the seal and dispensing performance with the specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a transparent plastic bottle protect the contents from light?
No, transparent PET transmits light and does not protect the contents from it. For shampoos, shower gels, and most standard products this is not a problem as long as they are not left in direct sunlight. Products containing vegetable oils prone to oxidation, natural colourants, or essential oils are best stored in a cabinet, or a dark-material container should be chosen instead.
Can a 500 ml plastic bottle be filled right to the top?
This is not recommended; the bottle should be filled to the nominal volume of 500 ml. The headspace above the fill level serves as a reserve for the cap and for expansion of the contents when temperature changes. A bottle filled to the neck may overflow when the flip-top is opened or when warmed, and the product can enter the thread and reach the outer wall.
Can a hot product be filled into a PET bottle?
No, a PET bottle is not intended for hot-fill applications. The material softens at higher temperatures and the bottle may deform. Emulsions and surfactant products prepared with heat should be allowed to cool to room temperature before filling. The bottle must not be sterilised by boiling or hot steam, and even when empty it should be stored away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
Is a plastic bottle with a flip-top cap suitable for oils and alcohol-containing products?
Yes, standard body and massage oils as well as products with a low alcohol content can be filled into a PET bottle. Caution is warranted with a high proportion of essential oils, concentrated alcohol, and solvents, which may gradually degrade the plastic of the bottle or cap. In such cases a test with a filled sample over several weeks is recommended.
Can a bottle with a flip-top cap be reused?
Yes, both the bottle and the cap can be reused if they are undamaged and thoroughly cleaned. Wash them with warm — not hot — water and washing-up liquid. The opening and the flip-top hinge require particular attention, as product residue tends to accumulate there. After rinsing, disinfect both parts with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow them to dry completely.
