Product description

Macadamia oil, refined is a stable plant-based emollient obtained from the seeds (nuts) of the Macadamia integrifolia tree (macadamia). Most commonly, the oil is first obtained by pressing the seeds and is then refined (purification, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation) so that the final product is more neutral in colour and odour, more stable, and suitable for a wide range of cosmetic formulations. In practice it is used mainly to soften, smooth and support skin comfort without a heavy greasy film.

Active substances and natural components

  • Palmitoleic acid (omega-7): typical for macadamia; contributes to a “sebum-like” sensory profile (feeling similar to natural skin sebum) and to a soft, smoothed finish.
  • Monounsaturated fatty acids: support pleasant spreadability and comfort on the skin; the oil is often perceived as “soft” and non-slippery.
  • Trace components (depending on the degree of refining): tocopherols and phytosterols may naturally occur in oils, but their content may be reduced in refined oils.

Key benefits

  • Softens and smooths the skin surface (immediate “silky” feel).
  • Reduces the feeling of dryness – creates a protective lipid film and supports skin comfort.
  • Improves the sensory profile of creams, lotions and oil serums (less of a “heavy” impression compared to some rich oils).
  • Also suitable for fragrance-free products – refining typically reduces the natural odour and colour, so it has less impact on the final aroma of the formula.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial oils and oil serums (alone or in blends)
  • body oils, massage oils, shower oils
  • creams, body milks, emulsions (as part of the oil phase)
  • lip balms and protective balms for dry areas
  • hair products: oil masks, leave-in oils/creams, serum for hair ends
  • solid products: balms, sticks, butter creams

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: used at approximately 1–10 % in emulsions and oil-based products, depending on the target texture.
  • Miscible with most vegetable oils, butters, emollients and esters.
  • Insoluble in water – belongs to the oil phase; in aqueous products only with the help of a suitable emulsifier.

Safety and storage

  • For external use only; avoid direct contact with eyes.
  • Before first use, we recommend a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • In individuals with increased sensitivity to nuts, we recommend extra caution.
  • Store well closed, in a dry, dark place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.

FAQ – frequently searched questions

Is refined macadamia oil also suitable for fragrance-free cosmetics?

Yes. Refining typically reduces the natural aroma of the oil, so it has less influence on the final scent of the product and combines better both with perfuming and with completely fragrance-free formulations.

How can I use macadamia oil if I want a “lighter” feel on the face?

Reduce the overall proportion of the oil phase and combine macadamia oil with drier emollients (e.g. light esters or squalane). In emulsions, the choice of emulsifier and components that reduce greasiness (e.g. starches or micronised powders depending on the type of formula) also helps.

Is macadamia oil suitable for hair products even for fine hair?

Yes, but we recommend a lower dosage and application mainly to the lengths and ends. For fine hair it is advisable to choose a lighter leave-in serum or emulsion and to use the oil more as a softening additive rather than as the main “heavy” oil.

Can I use it in a product with active ingredients (e.g. retinoid, ceramides, niacinamide)?

Yes. In oil serums it serves as an emollient carrier and softening component. With retinoids it is important to follow the dosage recommended by the active supplier and the stabilisation conditions; in emulsions, pay attention to the correct pH (e.g. with niacinamide) and to the compatibility of the emulsifier with the actives.

How does refined and unrefined macadamia oil differ in cosmetics?

Refined oil usually has a more neutral odour and colour and tends to be more universal for formulations where you do not want to affect the aroma or shade of the product. Unrefined oil may have a more pronounced natural aroma and a higher proportion of natural minor components, but its properties may vary more between batches.
