Inulin is a natural fructan polysaccharide obtained from the roots of chicory(Cichorium intybus) by gentle extraction in water and subsequent drying. In cosmetics, it functions as a prebiotic ingredient that helps balance the skin microbiome, while also acting as a gentle humectant and skin softener. In rinse formulations, it can reduce the irritation of tenside systems and improve the overall feel of the product.
Raw material safety grade according to EWG: 1 (low risk)
Inulin is a versatile, natural and well-tolerated raw material that delivers moisturizing comfort, improved feel and support for the skin microbiome in a wide range of cosmetic formulations.
Is inulin suitable for sensitive skin?Yes, it is a mild raw material with good tolerability; it is also suitable in low percentages for formulations intended for sensitive skin.
Does inulin thicken a gel or emulsion? It has a rather light texturising effect - it gently increases viscosity and improves skin feel, but it is not a classic gel-forming polysaccharide like xanthan.
Can I combine it with glycerin and betaine?Yes, it makes a very nice moisturising combination and promotes comfort in cleansing/rinse products.
At what stage of production is it best to add it?Most commonly to the aqueous phase - either directly cold or when slightly heated for faster dissolution.
