Arginine is a natural essential amino acid necessary for the synthesis of proteins in the human body.

It is used mainly as a dietary supplement but it also has uses in the cosmetics industry, however not for its effects on hair and skin. As a cosmetic raw material it is used in low concentrations mainly to increase the pH of cosmetic products.

L-arginine has an alkaline pH and is much easier to work with than sodium hydroxide, which is usually used for this purpose, or baking soda. When producing natural cosmetics and especially when using natural ingredients, it is necessary to realize that many of them are sensitive to the pH range and pH changes and at undesirable values they lose their efficacy. This is particularly the case for natural preservatives but also certain emulsifiers. Some natural ingredients, on the contrary, lower the pH of the product (for example the preservative Euxyl K903) and if it is necessary to raise it back to pH 5.3–5.5 it is necessary to use an alkaline solution.

When working with the cationic surfactant EMULSENSE HC, arginine is the only substance that is compatible with it when increasing the pH of your conditioner.

To increase the pH of your cosmetic products, prepare a 10% arginine solution in distilled water and add it dropwise to the product whose pH you need to increase. In the event that you will also be adding a pH-sensitive substance to the product, adjust the pH of the product to the desired value before adding it.

Solubility: easy, insoluble in ethanol.

All supplied raw materials are of cosmetic grade, not suitable for internal use. When handling, use appropriate protective equipment.
