Product description

Oat Lipid e is a functional oat oil with the INCI name Avena sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, produced from oats (mainly oat bran), with the manufacturing process set up to maximise lipid yield and preserve natural “skin-identical” components.
Compared to common vegetable oils, Oat Lipid e has a unique lipid profile: approximately 90% neutral lipids (e.g. triacylglycerols and sterols) and 10% polar lipids (mainly phospholipids), and it also contains approximately 1–2% skin-identical ceramides.
The raw material naturally also brings antioxidant components (tocopherols/tocotrienols – forms of vitamin E and phenolic antioxidants), thanks to which it behaves as a stable emollient and can contribute to better stability of the oil phase in formulations.

Key benefits

  • Skin barrier support thanks to the presence of ceramides, phospholipids and sterols – particularly suitable in cases of dryness, discomfort and impaired barrier.
  • Soothing and softening effect – oat lipids naturally support skin comfort and reduce the “tightness” feeling after cleansing.
  • Excellent absorbency and a non-greasy feel – also suitable for lighter serums and emulsions where a heavy oily film is not desired.
  • Antioxidant protection of the oil phase – natural antioxidants help protect lipids from oxidation and can increase stability even in blends with less stable oils.
  • Non-comedogenic character (tested) – also suitable for formulations for skin prone to clogged pores.
  • “Skinification” of hair care – lipids (including ceramides and phospholipids) are a natural part of the hair fibre and can contribute to shine, smoothness and improved combability.
  • Ecological aspect – production uses by-products from oat processing (e.g. oat hulls) as an energy source, and the raw material has been assessed as readily biodegradable (OECD 301F).

Suitable for product types such as

  • Oil and emulsion serums for barrier support (especially for dry, sensitive or stressed skin).
  • Cream and balm formulations (face creams, body creams, all-purpose balms, regenerative ointments).
  • Post-cleansing products (e.g. hand creams for frequent washing, protective emulsions).
  • Sun care and after-sun – as a comfortable emollient in the oil phase.
  • Cleansing oils and oil-based makeup removers (as a softening component of the oil base).
  • Anti-acne and “non-comedogenic” formulations – as a functional emollient in lighter textures.
  • Hair care (conditioners, masks, hair serums, end oils, scalp care products).

Use in formulation

  • Solubility: lipophilic raw material – soluble in oils, immiscible with water.
  • Miscibility: compatible with common vegetable oils, esters, butters, waxes and oil-phase emulsifiers; suitable for both anhydrous and emulsion systems.
  • Recommended dosage based on available data: in practice, it is usually used in the range of 0.5–5%, depending on the product type and formulation target.
  • Tip for oil phase stability: in blends with oxidatively less stable oils, Oat Lipid e can contribute to stability thanks to its natural antioxidants (in a study, it improved the oxidative stability of sunflower oil at an addition level of 3%).
It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).

Safety and storage

  • According to an HRIPT test (application at 100%), the raw material was assessed as hypoallergenic and non-irritant; nevertheless, we recommend carrying out your own compatibility/tolerance test on final products, especially for very sensitive skin.
  • In cases of known hypersensitivity to oats or oat derivatives, exercise increased caution during formulation development.
  • Store in a dry, cool and dark place, in a well-closed container; minimise prolonged contact with air (oxidation of oils).
  • Use clean and dry tools during handling to avoid contamination.

FAQ

Is Oat Lipid e more suitable for oil-based products or for emulsions?

For both. In oil-based products (without water) it acts as a functional emollient (oils, balms, makeup removal). In emulsions, it belongs in the oil phase and is particularly suitable where you want a gentle, non-greasy feel and enhanced skin comfort.

How should I set the dosage if I am developing a product for very sensitive skin?

Start lower (e.g. at the lower end of the recommended range) and fine-tune according to skin feel and formulation stability. For sensitive-skin products, it is important to also test the interaction with the preservative, fragrance and surface-active agents.

Can Oat Lipid e worsen emulsion stability or, on the contrary, help support it?

By itself it is not an emulsifier, but thanks to its proportion of polar lipids it can influence the behaviour of the oil phase. Always assess stability in the specific formulation (type of emulsifier, phase ratio, viscosity). It is recommended to carry out accelerated stability tests at several dosage levels.

Is this raw material also suitable for products for teenage skin?

Yes, if you are targeting light textures and a balanced oil phase. For teenage skin, it is often crucial that the product is not heavy and that the formulation also contains an appropriate cleansing/soothing component (e.g. mild surfactants, non-irritating actives, simple fragrance).

Is it meaningful to combine Oat Lipid e with additional ceramides or “barrier” actives?

Yes, especially if you want to strengthen the barrier concept of the formulation. A meaningful combination includes other stratum corneum lipids (e.g. cholesterol/sterols, suitable fatty acids) and hydrating components that reduce discomfort (humectants and soothing ingredients according to the product type).
