Peru balsam

Peru balsam is a dark brown, viscous resin of the Myroxylon pereirae tree with a sweet, balsamic scent. It is harvested in the wild and then purified and filtered. It is not an essential oil or a distillate, but a natural resin of cosmetic grade.

Do not use it as a fragrance ingredient

Under Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, raw Peru balsam must not be used in cosmetics as a fragrance ingredient. Its supplier states the same. It can therefore be included in a cosmetic product only with a function other than fragrancing, and only based on the product safety assessment. If you are looking for a fragrance for cosmetics, choose from our fragrance oils or essential oils.

What it is used for

The supplier lists it for use in skin, body and hair care, for example in creams, body butters, balms and oils. It gives products a warming and soothing feel.

What to watch out for

• Allergens: Peru balsam is a known contact allergen and contains a high proportion of Benzyl Benzoate. Before use, read the list of allergens and the safety data sheet.
• Dilution: never apply it directly to the skin; it is used only as a component of a finished product.
• Storage: store it in a cool, dry place and protect it from heat and sunlight.
