Product description

Sodium Phytate is a natural chelating (complex-forming) agent obtained from rice bran of the plant Oryza sativa. It is produced by aqueous extraction of rice bran, followed by neutralization of phytic acid, resulting in a stable sodium salt – sodium phytate. Its main role in cosmetics is binding metal ions (for example iron, copper, calcium or magnesium), which are naturally present in water or plant-based raw materials and can negatively affect product stability. Sodium Phytate is a biodegradable and natural alternative to synthetic chelators, such as EDTA, and is fully accepted in natural and “clean beauty” cosmetics.

Composition

  • Sodium Phytate > 70 %
  • Aqua < 30 % (bound in the crystalline structure of the powder)

Physical and chemical properties

  • Appearance: white powder
  • Solubility: soluble in water
  • pH (10 % solution): 10 – 12

Active functions and mechanism of action

  • Binds metal ions (Fe, Cu) that catalyse oxidation processes.
  • Protects oils, vitamins and active ingredients against degradation.
  • Complexes calcium and magnesium from hard water.
  • Improves surfactant performance and foam stability.

Key benefits

  • Natural and biodegradable chelator.
  • Increases stability and shelf life of cosmetic products.
  • Prevents oxidation of sensitive components.
  • Improves foaming of cleansing products.

Suitable for use in products such as

  • Shampoos and shower gels.
  • Cleansing gels, foams and micellar waters.
  • Creams and emulsions with plant oils.
  • Natural and organic cosmetics.

Use in formulation

  • Water-soluble.
  • Compatible with anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants.
  • Miscible with most cosmetic raw materials.
  • Recommended dosage: 0.1 % (protection against oxidation), 0.2 % (improvement of foam quality).
  • It is recommended to add during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).

Safety and storage

  • Not classified as a CMR substance.
  • Does not contain allergens, GMO or nanoparticles.
  • Suitable for vegan formulations.
  • Store in a dry place, protect from moisture, heat and direct sunlight.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

What is a chelator and why is it important in cosmetics?

A chelator is a substance that can bind metal ions such as iron, copper, calcium or magnesium, which are naturally present in water and plant-derived raw materials. These ions are not harmful as such, but in cosmetic formulations they can accelerate oxidation, reduce the effectiveness of active ingredients and shorten the product’s shelf life. Sodium Phytate acts as a natural chelator – it “captures” these ions in a stable complex, thereby helping to protect the formula, improve its stability and prolong the freshness of the product.

Is Sodium Phytate a humectant?

No, Sodium Phytate is not a humectant. It does not bind water in the skin and does not provide hydration. Its role is to stabilize the formulation and protect the other components. In products it is often combined with humectants, the effectiveness of which it helps to protect indirectly.

Is Sodium Phytate suitable for natural cosmetics?

Yes, Sodium Phytate has a Natural Origin Index = 1 according to ISO 16128, is biodegradable and is fully accepted in natural, vegan and environmentally oriented cosmetics.
