Product description

Sodium Phytate is a natural chelating (complexing) agent derived from rice bran(Oryza sativa). It is produced by aqueous extraction of rice bran, followed by neutralization of phytic acid with sodium salts to produce a fully neutralized and highly stable form - sodium phytate. This raw material represents a modern, biodegradable alternative to synthetic chelators such as EDTA with excellent environmental compatibility.

Ingredients

  • Sodium Phytate > 70%
  • Aqua < 30% (bound in the crystalline structure of the powder)

Physical and chemical properties

  • Appearance: white powder
  • Solubility: soluble in water
  • pH (10 % solution): 10 - 12

Active substances and mechanism of action

  • Binds metal ions (iron, copper) which catalyse oxidation processes.
  • Stabilises formulations susceptible to oxidation of active substances and oils.
  • Complexes calcium and magnesium ions from hard water.
  • Improves tenside function and foam quality.

Key benefits

  • Natural and biodegradable chelator.
  • Enhances the stability of cosmetic formulations.

  • Shampoos and shower gels.
  • Cleansing gels and skin foams.
  • Emulsions and creams with vegetable oils.
  • Natural and organic cosmetics.

Use in formulation

  • Water soluble.
  • Compatible with anionic, non-ionic and amphoteric tensides.
  • Miscible with most cosmetic raw materials.
  • Recommended dosage: 0,1 % (antioxidant stability), 0,2 % (foam improvement).
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at temperatures below 40 °C).

Safety and storage

  • Does not contain allergens, GMOs or nanoparticles.
  • Suitable for vegan formulations.
  • Store in a dry place, protect from moisture, heat and direct sunlight.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sodium Phytate suitable as a replacement for EDTA?

Yes, Sodium Phytate is considered an effective natural alternative to EDTA with comparable chelating ability and significantly better biodegradability.

In what types of cosmetics does it have the most benefit?

It is most beneficial in cleansing products, shampoos, shower gels and emulsions where it improves the stability, foaming and protection of the active ingredients.

Is sodium phytate suitable for natural cosmetics?

Yes, it has a Natural Origin Index = 1 according to ISO 16128 and is fully accepted in natural and organic cosmetics.

What is a chelator and why is it used in cosmetics?

A chelator is a substance that can bind metal ions (such as iron, copper, calcium or magnesium) naturally present in water and plant materials. Although these ions are not harmful, in cosmetic products they can accelerate oxidation, reduce the effectiveness of active ingredients and shorten the shelf life of the product. Sodium Phytate acts as a natural chelator - it "traps" these ions in a stable complex, helping to protect the formulation, improve its stability and promote longer product freshness.

What is a humectant and what role does it have in cosmetics?

A humectant is a substance that has the ability to bind and attract water, helping to keep skin and hair hydrated. It works by binding moisture to itself from the surrounding area or from deeper layers of the skin and slowly releasing it to the surface. In cosmetics, humectants are used to improve the hydration, smoothness and elasticity of the skin, as well as to prevent dryness and uncomfortable tightness.
