Ultramarines – intense blue and violet
9 ultramarine pigment items: blue ultramarine and violet in two undertones – red and blue. Every shade is available in 10 g, 50 g and 500 g packs.
Ultramarines give intense blue and violet tones to powders, eyeshadows and soaps; thanks to their heat and alkali stability they belong, together with the oxides, among the pigments suited to cold process soap. For an even colour we recommend a fine pre-dispersion in a small amount of oil or glycerine.
A guide dosage is 0.05 – 1.0 % in powders and colour cosmetics and 0.1 – 2.0 % in soaps; add the pigment gradually and keep checking the intensity of the colour as you go.
Do not use ultramarines in acidic products with a pH below roughly 7 – for example in bath bombs with citric acid or in AHA exfoliants. In an acidic environment the pigment breaks down, fades and can release a sulphurous smell. For bath products reach for the bath bomb colourants.
Matt earthy shades are among the oxide pigments, pearlescent ones in the MICA/MIKA category; the whole group sits in the powder dyes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between violet ultramarine with a red and with a blue undertone?
A red undertone shifts the violet towards a warmer tone, a blue one towards a cooler tone. When mixing colours in soap or in a powder you can therefore steer the resulting shade deliberately.
Are ultramarines stable in cold process soap?
Yes – together with the oxides they stand out for their heat and alkali stability. For an even colour, disperse them finely in a small amount of oil or glycerine before mixing them in.
