Product description

Xanthan gum is a natural polysaccharide formed by fermentation of sugars by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. It is subsequently precipitated, dried and milled into a fine powder that is fully soluble in water (cold and hot). In formulations it acts as a thickener, stabilizer and rheology modifier with shear-thinning behavior for a pleasant application.

Key benefits:

  • Efficient thickening at low dosage and formation of clear gels in the aqueous phase.
  • Stabilization of emulsions (O/W) and suspension of particles (pigments, exfoliating particles, active ingredients).
  • Wide applicability in cosmetic pH range and good resistance to temperature fluctuations.
  • Pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) behavior – easy spreading without loss of final texture.

Suitable for products such as:

  • Gels and serums, cleansing gels, toners
  • Creams and body/facial lotions (especially O/W emulsions)
  • Shampoos, shower gels, body soaps
  • Toothpastes, masks, products with suspended particles

Use in formulation:

  • Solubility: in water (cold and hot)
  • Dosage: typically 0.1–1 %; for stronger thickening up to 2 %.
  • Phase of incorporation: into the aqueous phase (direct dispersion into water under stirring; for better dispersion a premix with glycerin is suitable or sprinkling into the mixing vortex).
  • pH / stability: stable in cosmetic pH 4–7; overall it shows small viscosity changes over a wide temperature range.

Safety rating of the raw material according to EWG: 1 (low risk)

FAQ

How to prevent lumps during mixing?
Slowly sprinkle xanthan gum into rapidly stirred water or first disperse it in a small amount of glycerin and then pour into the aqueous phase.

Is it also suitable for “natural” cosmetics?
Yes, it is a fermentation polysaccharide commonly used in natural and “clean” formulations.

In which systems does it work best?
In aqueous systems and O/W emulsions (thickens the aqueous phase, improves stability and suspends particles).
