Product description

Xanthan gum is a natural polysaccharide produced by the fermentation of sugars by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris. It is then precipitated, dried and ground into a fine powder that is completely soluble in water (both cold and warm). In formulations, it acts as a thickener, stabilizer and rheological modifier with shear-thinning behavior for a pleasant application.

Key benefits:

  • Effective thickening at low dosage and formation of clear gels in the aqueous phase.
  • Stabilization of emulsions (O/W) and suspension of particles (pigments, exfoliating particles, actives).
  • Wide applicability in cosmetic pH and good resistance to temperature fluctuations.
  • Pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) behaviour - easy spreading without loss of final texture.

Suitable for products such as:

  • Gels and serums, cleansing gels, tonics
  • Creams and body lotions/milks (especially O/W emulsions)
  • Shampoos, shower gels, body soaps
  • Toothpastes, masks, products with suspended particles

Use in formulation:

  • Solubility: in water (cold and warm)
  • Dosage: typically 0.1-1 %; up to 2 % for thicker concentrations.
  • Incorporation phase: into the aqueous phase (direct dispersion into water with stirring; for better dispersion, premix with glycerine or sprinkle into the mixing vortex is suitable).
  • pH/stability: stable at cosmetic pH 4-7; overall shows little viscosity change over a wide temperature range.

Raw material safety grade according to EWG: 1 (low risk)

FAQ

How to prevent lumps when mixing?
Slowly add Xanthan gum to rapidly stirred water or disperse it first in a small amount of glycerin and then pour it into the aqueous phase.

Is it also suitable for "natural" cosmetics?
Yes, it is a fermentable polysaccharide commonly used in natural and "clean" formulations.

In what systems does it work best?
In aqueous and O/W emulsions (thickens the aqueous phase, improves stability and suspends particles).
