Most often it is because the allantoin was not completely dissolved or a concentration close to its solubility at a given temperature and pH was used. Dissolving in the aqueous phase at a higher temperature, longer stirring and possibly reducing the dosage helps; a stable pH of the finished product is also important.
First, dissolve it completely in the aqueous component (ideally before thickening). If the gels become cloudy or sediment forms, reduce the dose, adjust the dissolution process and check compatibility with the specific thickener and electrolytes in the recipe.
This is not its main function, but in practice it may improve the "feel on the skin" by promoting softness and comfort. To actually reduce stickiness, it is more common to work with a combination of humectants (e.g. propandiol/betaine) and with suitable emollients or esters in an emulsion.
Yes, it is often combined with barrier and soothing ingredients. For such combinations, pay particular attention to the pH and solubility of the individual actives to ensure that the product is stable and without crystallisation or separation.
Yes, but be aware that it is water-soluble and may have limited functionality in anhydrous or low-water systems. It works better in products that hydrate quickly when used or contain an aqueous phase; in solid formulations, test the dose and effect on hardness/breakage.
