Product description

Coco-Caprylate/Caprate is a light, "dry" vegetable emollient - a mixture of esters formed by esterification of fatty alcohols from coconut oil with caprylic and capric acids (C8/C10). In cosmetics, it is used as a modern alternative to silicones: it improves spreadability, reduces greasy feel and gives the product a pleasant, velvety glide without a heavy film.

Key benefits

  • Lightweight "dry" emolliency - does not leave a heavy greasy feel.
  • Silicone effect in more natural formulations: smooth slip and velvety finish.
  • Improves the spreadability of creams, butters, balms and oil serums.
  • Softens and smoothes the skin and hair surface (better product sensory).
  • Helps reduce stickiness and heaviness of oilier oil ingredients.

Suitable for products such as

  • Body creams and lotions, light skin creams and emulsions.
  • Oil serums, dry oils and massage blends with a "non-greasy" feel.
  • Lip balms and protective sticks (improving slip, comfort).
  • Make-up and decorative cosmetics (better spread of pigments, more pleasant finish).
  • Hair cosmetics - conditioners, rinse-free products, oil wrap mixtures.

Use in formulation

  • Soluble in: oils and fats (lipid phase).
  • Miscible with: vegetable oils, butters, ester emollients and most lipid ingredients.
  • Compatible with: common emulsifiers and preservative systems used in emulsions (with proper pH and formulation design).
  • Recommended dosage: approximately 2-20% depending on product type (lower for light creams/lotions, higher for balms and oil products).
  • Technological notes: added to the oil phase; helps to improve sensoriality even with higher proportions of thick butters and waxes.

    Safety and storage

    • Avoid contact with eyes; rinse with water in case of contact.
    • Observe normal hygiene principles and use clean tools when working.
    • Store in a tightly closed container, dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
    • Keep out of reach of children.

    FAQ

Is Coco-Caprylate/Caprate suitable as a replacement for silicones in hair products?

Yes, it is often used to soften slip and make hair feel "slicked back". However, it does not behave exactly identically to silicones - the result depends on the entire formula and hair type.

Can it reduce the "greasy" feeling in products with a higher proportion of oils?

Yes, it is one of the emollients that greatly improve the sensoriality of oil blends and help create a drier, lighter finish.

Will it affect emulsion stability if I add it to a cream?

It can change the viscosity and behaviour of the oil phase. At higher dosages, it is advisable to verify stability (temperature/cool cycles, centrifuge) and adjust the emulsifier or fat proportion as necessary.

Is it suitable for lip balms and sticks?

Yes, it improves slip and comfort during application. However, for sticks it can soften the texture, so it is a good idea to fine-tune the ratio of waxes and hard butters.

Is this emollient suitable for oilier or acne-prone skin?

It is often used in light emulsions and 'dry' oils, but suitability depends on individual tolerance and the overall formulation. For problematic skin, it is recommended to test the final product in a smaller area.
