Product description

Floral water, hydrosol, geranium is a gentle aqueous cosmetic raw material obtained by steam distillation of the aromatic aerial parts of geranium, most commonly the species Pelargonium graveolens or related fragrant pelargoniums. During distillation, steam passes through the plant material, releasing the plant’s volatile aromatic and water-soluble components, and after cooling a hydrosol is formed – an aqueous phase with a delicate rose-herbal scent typical of geranium.
Geranium hydrosol is popular in cosmetics for its balancing character, pleasant floral-herbal profile and wide use in facial, body and hair products. It is particularly suitable for formulations for combination, oily, mature, sensitive, tired, reddened or comfort-demanding skin. Compared to geranium essential oil, the hydrosol is significantly gentler, aqueous and easy to incorporate into water-rich formulations such as toners, mists, serums, gels, creams, masks and mild cleansing products.

Key benefits

  • Balancing floral water – suitable for products for combination, oily and mature skin.
  • Supports comfort of sensitive skin – practical for formulations for skin prone to redness, tightness or irritation.
  • Delicate rose-herbal aromatic profile – gives cosmetics a natural floral scent without the need for strong perfuming.
  • Suitable as part of the water phase – can partially or completely replace distilled water in selected cosmetic formulations.
  • Suitable for products for a fresh-looking complexion – often used in toners, facial waters, light serums and hydrating gels.
  • Good compatibility with humectants – suitable with glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol, allantoin, betaine and hyaluronic acid.
  • Universal use – suitable for facial, body, hair and gentle cleansing cosmetics.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial waters, toners and face mists for combination, oily, mature, sensitive or tired skin,
  • light hydrating gels and serums with aloe vera, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or allantoin,
  • creams, facial milks and body emulsions as part of the water phase,
  • aftershave and post-depilation products to support skin comfort,
  • body sprays and refreshing waters with a delicate floral-herbal profile,
  • clay, herbal and powder masks to be mixed just before use,
  • gentle cleansing gels, facial cleansing waters and micellar products with an appropriately chosen pH and preservative system,
  • hair tonics, shampoos and conditioners for a fresh feeling of the scalp and a subtle natural scent,
  • cosmetic compresses and poultices for local care of stressed skin.

Use in formulation

  • Recommended usage rate: usually 1 – 100 % depending on product type; may form part or all of the water phase.
  • Soluble in: water and aqueous cosmetic systems.
  • Miscible with: distilled water, glycerin, propanediol, aloe vera juice, hydrogels and water-soluble active ingredients.
  • Compatible with: oil-in-water emulsions, facial toners, gels, serums, mild cleansing products, shampoos and rinse-off hair care.
  • Emulsion products: incorporate into the water phase; for heated formulations it is advisable to add part of the hydrosol during the cooling phase to minimize unnecessary overheating of delicate aromatic components.
  • It is recommended to add during cooling (at temperatures below 40 °C).
  • Leave-on products: particularly suitable for facial mists, toners, serums, gels and creams; it is always necessary to check the final pH and microbiological stability of the finished product.
  • Rinse-off products: may be used in shampoos, shower gels, foams and mild cleansing products as part of the water phase.
  • Preservation: when used in your own formulation, it is necessary to assess the preservative system of the entire finished product, especially for products with a high water content.
  • Formulation pH: always measure the final pH in the finished formulation and adjust according to the preservative used, active ingredients and target product type.

Safety and storage

  • Intended for cosmetic use and for further processing in cosmetic formulations.
  • For sensitive skin or first-time use, we recommend performing a patch test on a small area of skin.
  • Avoid contamination of the contents – use clean utensils, close the container immediately after use and do not pour back raw material that has already been taken out.
  • Store in a well-closed container, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Storage in a cool, dry and dark place is recommended; hydrosols are aqueous raw materials sensitive to microbial contamination.
  • When manufacturing the finished cosmetic product, always verify the final pH, microbiological stability and suitability of the preservative system.
  • For products intended for children, pregnant women or very sensitive skin, it is necessary to assess the suitability of the entire formulation, not only of the hydrosol itself.

FAQ

Can geranium hydrosol replace geranium essential oil?

Not completely. The hydrosol is an aqueous raw material with a delicate scent and a low content of aromatic substances, whereas the essential oil is a concentrated oily fraction. In a formulation they differ in intensity, dosage and way of incorporation.

Is geranium hydrosol suitable for cosmetics without added fragrance?

Yes, it can also be used in formulations without added fragrance. However, you need to take into account that it has its own natural rose-herbal scent, which may be noticeable in simple aqueous products.

Can it be used in a product with hyaluronic acid?

Yes, it is suitable as a water base for gels and serums with hyaluronic acid. During preparation it is important to allow the hyaluronic acid to hydrate sufficiently, work hygienically and use an appropriate preservative system.

Is it suitable for formulations for mature skin?

Yes, it can be part of formulations for mature skin, especially in hydrating toners, serums and emulsions. The final effect, however, depends on the entire formulation, for example on humectants, lipid components, antioxidants and active ingredients.

Can geranium hydrosol be used in a clay mask?

Yes, it is suitable for mixing clay, herbal or powder masks immediately before application. A mixture prepared in this way is intended for immediate use and should not be stored without proven preservation.

Can it be added to an already finished cream or toner?

It is not recommended to add it afterwards to a finished preserved product without adjusting the formulation. This changes the ratio of water, preservative, active ingredients and pH, which may affect stability as well as microbiological safety.
