D-Glucono-1,5-lactone (known under the abbreviation GLD; chemical formula C6H10O6)) is a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that is found in its natural state (gluconic acid) in honey, royal jelly, fruit juices, wine and various fermented products. It is considered the next generation of AHA acids.
Gluconic acid is a glucose molecule in which the aldehyde function has been oxidized to an acid function. Naturally, bees do this with the help of enzymes, and in fermented products (wine, kombucha, etc.) this happens through microorganisms. It is therefore the dry form of gluconic acid, which is obtained by removing water during the crystallization process. When it is dissolved in water, a solution of gluconic acid is formed. In the food industry, it is an ingredient with the designation GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe). In the cosmetic industry, it is used due to its moisturizing effects on the skin, which helps to smooth fine lines on the face. It is also used for the gradual and continuous pH reduction in cosmetic products. It is also used in hair care – it helps to keep the hair shiny and soft. It is often combined with other preservatives to enhance the antimicrobial stability of finished products. It is ideal to combine it with preservatives whose efficacy depends on the low pH of the product. Purity: 99.8 %Soluble in water (5 mg/ml).
