Product description

Glyceryl Stearate SE is a self-emulsifying form of glyceryl stearate - it is an emulsifying wax produced by the esterification of glycerin and stearic acid (from vegetable oils), where "SE" means that the raw material also contains a small amount of soap components (alkaline stearates), which promote the formation of a stable oil-in-water emulsion. In formulations, it acts as both an emulsifier and thickener - improving viscosity, creaminess and reducing the "watery" feel of emulsions.

Key benefits

  • Self-emulsifying emulsifier for O/W (oil-in-water) emulsions.
  • Increases emulsionstability and helps bind the oil phase.
  • Thickens and structures - gives a creamy, "fuller" texture.
  • Improves sensoriality - softer glide and smoother feel on the skin.
  • Promotes a pearlescent effect in some shampoos and shower products (depending on formulation and dosage).

Suitable for products such as

  • Skin creams and emulsions (day/night).
  • Body lotions, creams and butters (emulsion).
  • Cream deodorants and emulsion balms.
  • Hair conditioners and cream masks.
  • Shampoos and shower gels - as a supporting structure-forming ingredient (if desired).

Use in formulation

  • Miscible with: oils, butters and common emollients; especially for use in O/W emulsions.
  • Soluble in: oil phase on heating (melts); insoluble in cold water.
  • Recommended dosage: typically 2-6 % in emulsions (higher dosages increase viscosity and waxy feel).
  • Technological procedure: add to oil phase and heat until completely melted; typically heat both aqueous and oil phases to a similar temperature, then emulsify and stir until cool.
  • Stability tip: for more demanding formulations, it is advisable to combine with an additional stabilizer (e.g. cetyl/cetearyl alcohol, xanthan) according to the target texture.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a tightly closed container, in a dry place, out of direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Ensure hygiene at work so that the raw material and subsequent product are not unnecessarily contaminated.

FAQ

What does "SE" stand for Glyceryl Stearate?

"SE" stands for self-emulsifying - the raw material contains ingredients that allow the oil-in-water emulsion to form more easily without the need for the separate addition of soap emulsifiers.

Is it also suitable for anhydrous balms and oils?

It is primarily intended for use in emulsions. In anhydrous products, it can act more as a structuring agent, but the self-emulsifying effect is only fully apparent in the presence of water.

Can it affect the pH of the finished product?

As SE types may contain soap ingredients, in some formulations they may subtly affect the final pH. It is always recommended to measure the pH of the finished emulsion and adjust as necessary.

Why might a cream with Glyceryl Stearate SE seem waxy to me?

At higher dosages or with a higher proportion of solid lipids, the emulsifying wax may create a firmer texture and a "waxier" feel. It helps to reduce the dose, adjust the oil phase or add a lighter emollient.

Can it be combined with other emulsifiers?

Yes. It is often combined with coemulsifiers and stabilizers to fine-tune viscosity, slip and stability (e.g. with fatty alcohols or polymers). Always do a stability and sensory test.
