Product description
Neossance Hemisqualane is a lightweight, fast-absorbing, sugarcane-derived emollient, used as a modern alternative to silicones or light mineral oils. It is a highly pure, stable, hydrocarbon emollient produced biotechnologically – typically via fermentation of renewable plant-derived sugars followed by processing into a fraction with a very pleasant “dry touch” sensorial feel.
In practice, hemisqualane is especially popular because it provides excellent slip, reduces tackiness, improves spreadability and at the same time does not leave a greasy film. In anhydrous products it acts as a “light carrier” for oils and lipophilic active ingredients, while in hair care it helps to smooth the hair surface without weighing it down.
Key benefits
- Ultra-light emollient with a “dry” finish – also suitable for oily and combination skin.
- Improves spreadability and reduces the feeling of heaviness in oil-based and emulsion-based products.
- Alternative to silicones – improves slip and sensorial profile without the typical “silicone feel”.
- Supports softness of skin and hair without a visible greasy film.
- Stable and oxidation-resistant – suitable for formulations sensitive to yellowing of oils.
Suitable for products such as
- facial oils and oil serums with a light texture,
- creams and emulsions for oily, combination and blemish-prone skin,
- tinted products and make-up (to improve slip and spreadability),
- “dry oil”-type body oils,
- hair serums, length and ends oils, leave-in products,
- lip balms and solid butters (for lightening the texture and improving application).
Use in formulation
- soluble in the oil phase and miscible with most vegetable oils, esters, butters and waxes,
- compatible with common emulsifying systems (O/W and W/O) as part of the oil phase,
- helps to reduce tackiness and the “heavy” feel when using higher levels of castor oil, butters or dense esters.
It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C).
Physical properties
- clear, low-viscosity liquid with very light slip,
- non-greasy, “dry touch” finish after application,
- high oxidative stability compared to many unsaturated oils.
Safety and storage
- Commonly used emollient with good tolerance in leave-on and rinse-off products.
- On extremely sensitive skin, any emollient may exceptionally trigger an individual reaction; a tolerance test in the finished formulation is recommended.
- Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and in a well-closed container to prevent contamination and unnecessary evaporation of light fractions.
No. Hemisqualane (C13-15 Alkane) is a lighter and more volatile emollient with a sensorially “drier” feel; squalane is usually heavier, more “oily” and remains on the skin for a longer time.
Yes. It is used as a “texture lightener” – it thins rich oils and esters, improves slip and accelerates the perceived absorption without stickiness.
In many cases yes, because it is lipophilic and mixes well with the oil phase. However, always test the solubility and stability of the specific extract or fragrance in a small sample.
It can be suitable as a light layer to soften and reduce frizz without weighing the hair down. For very dry, porous hair it is often combined with richer oils or esters for increased nourishment.
