D-Panthenol 75% W, 100 ml

D-Panthenol 75% W is a liquid form of provitamin B5, added to cosmetics for moisturisation, support of skin barrier recovery and hair conditioning. Both skin and hair tolerate it well, which is why it ranks among the most commonly used active ingredients in formulations for dry, irritated and sensitive skin and in care for stressed hair.

The raw material contains 75 – 78.5 % D-panthenol dissolved in water. It is suitable for both rinse-off and leave-on products and is compatible with all common types of surfactants.

• Moisturisation – panthenol acts as a humectant, binding water in the skin and hair shaft. Its most pronounced effect is in leave-on products, where it remains on the skin longer.
• Skin barrier recovery – supports skin regeneration after shaving, sun exposure, frequent washing or exposure to surfactants.
• Soothing effect – reduces the feeling of tightness and redness, which is why it has proven itself in children's cosmetics, after-shave products and intimate hygiene.
• Hair conditioning – improves elasticity and shine of hair, eases detangling and reduces brittleness. Suitable also for colour-treated and damaged hair.
• Broad compatibility – its non-ionic character allows it to be combined with anionic, cationic, non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants as well as with alcohol.

Use in formulation

It dissolves in water and tolerates alcohol as well. It cannot be incorporated directly into oils or anhydrous balms, where it would separate. In tonics, serums and gels it is added directly into the water phase while stirring. In emulsions it is safer to wait for the cooling phase and incorporate it below 40 °C, or alternatively add it to the finished base.

The recommended dosage is 0.5 – 5 %. The solution contains 75 % active substance, so 1 % of the raw material corresponds to approximately 0.75 % pure panthenol. As a guide: 0.5 – 1 % in tonics and shampoos, 1 – 3 % in creams and serums, up to 5 % in restorative masks and after-shave products.

In hair cosmetics it works in shampoos, conditioners and leave-in sprays. In rinse-off products part of the ingredient is washed away. A more noticeable result is therefore provided by a conditioner or leave-in spray, where it remains on the hair.

• after-shave and after-sun products, hand, foot and eye area creams
• children's cosmetics and intimate hygiene products
• shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and leave-in sprays for dry and colour-treated hair
• shower gels and bath products, where it reduces the drying effect of surfactants
• water-based deodorants and decorative cosmetics with a water phase, such as foundation creams

Good to know

It combines well with other soothing and moisturising ingredients, for example allantoin, bisabolol, hyaluronic acid or hydrolats. In combination with niacinamide it forms the basis for formulations targeted at skin barrier recovery.

For acidic formulations near the lower limit of pH 3, for example with glycolic or lactic acid, verify stability in the finished product.
