Product description

Inulin is a natural fructan polysaccharide obtained from the roots of chicory(Cichorium intybus) by gentle extraction in water and subsequent drying. In cosmetics, it functions as a prebiotic ingredient that helps balance the skin microbiome, while also acting as a gentle humectant and skin softener. In rinse formulations, it can reduce the irritation of tenside systems and improve the overall feel of the product.

Key benefits:

  • Prebiotic support of the skin microbiome - helps maintain skin comfort and balance.
  • Hydration and softening - binds water and improves skin smoothness without a sticky feeling.
  • Comfort in tenside systems - contributes to better tolerability of shower gels and shampoos.
  • Texturizing effect - slightly increases the viscosity of the aqueous phase and improves the spreadability of emulsions.

Suitable for products such as:

  • Tonics, skin and hair serums, moisturizing essences
  • Cream and gel emulsions, masks
  • Shampoos, conditioners, shower gels (rinse-off products)
  • Micellar waters and gentle cleansers

Use in formulation:

  • Solubility: well soluble in water (faster in warm/hot); insoluble in oils.
  • Dosage: typically 0.1-3% in leave-on products; 0.5-5% in rinse-off formulations, depending on desired effect.
  • Incorporation phase: into aqueous phase - pour directly into water with stirring (cold-process) or dissolve in aqueous phase on heating, then emulsify/cool.
  • Temperature: warm water is suitable for rapid dispersion; avoid prolonged heating at very low pH.

Raw material safety grade according to EWG: 1 (low risk)

Inulin is a versatile, natural and well-tolerated raw material that delivers moisturizing comfort, improved feel and support for the skin microbiome in a wide range of cosmetic formulations.

FAQ

Is inulin suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, it is a mild raw material with good tolerability; it is also suitable in low percentages for formulations intended for sensitive skin.

Does inulin thicken a gel or emulsion?
It has a rather light texturising effect - it gently increases viscosity and improves skin feel, but it is not a classic gel-forming polysaccharide like xanthan.

Can I combine it with glycerin and betaine?
Yes, it makes a very nice moisturising combination and promotes comfort in cleansing/rinse products.

At what stage of production is it best to add it?
Most commonly to the aqueous phase - either directly cold or when slightly heated for faster dissolution.
